[edit]Hendrix guitar at Monterey
[edit]Do parts of the guitar Jimi Hendrix set on fire at Monterey Pop Festival still exist? If the guitar was still intact today, what would it be worth? $500,000-$1,000,000 would be my guess. Bubba73 (talk), 04:21, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
- If the guitar was intact today it wouldn't be worth anything much, because it wouldn't have been set on fire. DJ Clayworth (talk) 13:39, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
- "Much" is a relative term. It would still be worth more than I could spend on it without seriously curtailing my living expenses for the simple fact of it being owned by Hendrix. It would however be worth "less" than one that had been set on fire. And to the OP, it's hard to say how much it would be worth since it's a one of a kind item which would most likely be auctioned and not just sold off a shelf. Sometimes even the auctioneers don't know how much something is going to be sold for. Dismas|(talk) 15:09, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
- this is a VERY vague answer, but maybe it could send you in the right direction...I seem to remember hearing that the guitar (or what's left) was in the possession of one of the Zappa kids (definitely one of the boys). But, I also seem to remember hearing he may have sold it or auctioned it. Hope that helps a LITTLE. Also- despite it's condition it would in fact be worth quite a lot. First and foremost, it's a piece of history. That image is ICONIC. Secondly, you have no idea what guitar collectors will pay for these type things, especially if they've been owned my a legend. I am member of quite a few guitar forums and clubs and these guys are nuts. paying 15K or 25K for a guitar is not unheard of. 12.204.178.35 (talk) 15:58, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
- Some of Eric Clapton's guitars have sold for something in the ballpark of $500,000 and this one is arguably more famous. Bubba73 (talk), 15:59, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
- I would say "unarguably". Tempshill (talk) 22:01, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
- Indeed. While Clapton is arguably more famous, a specific guitar of his is likely quite a bit less famous than the one Hendrix set aflame. Dismas|(talk) 22:04, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
- Your hedging is unnecessary. Any guitar of Clapton's will definitely be less famous than the burned Hendrix guitar; and Google says that Hendrix is about 11 times as famous as Clapton, which I think is roughly correct. Tempshill (talk) 21:07, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

- According to this news story, one of his burned guitars sold for £280,000. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TrogWoolley (talk • contribs) 16:50, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

- Wow, that is about what I guessed. And the Monerey one is much more famous (I didn't know about that one.) Bubba73 (talk), 22:28, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
- In 2002 Dweezil Zappa tried to sell another guitar set on fire by Hendrix (the one mentioned by 12.204.178.35) but he failed to receive a satisfactory bid. The highest bid was £300,000 though, about the same price as TrogWoolley found, and like you say, the Monterey guitar is more famous. 194.171.56.13 (talk) 09:06, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
