Flag of Ireland

[edit]

Hi, about this article, to depict the correct flag of Ireland in 1897, which is the correct one:

The tricolour had no legal status before Irish independence, and was apparently rarely used before the 1916 rising. In 1897 Ireland was part of the United Kingdom, so the Union Flag was the legal flag of the country. However, if Ireland was competing independently of Great Britain in that competition (which would have to be checked) they might have used a different flag. This article about the rider - http://www.irishcycling.com/2000/cromwell/01/harryreynolds1.htm - says that he objected to the Union Flag, so a "green flag" was raised instead. Irish nationalists did use a green flag, sometimes with a harp, before the tricolour became popular. Wymspen (talk) 12:03, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The article on the Flag of Ireland hints that the green flag with the harp may be appropriate where the Union Flag wouldn't be. Especially if he competed for Ireland as a separate entity from competing for the UK. --Jayron32 13:01, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:IRISH FLAGS for Wikipedia policy on this matter. For general information, see Cross-border flag for Ireland. jnestorius(talk) 13:03, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
