Captain Sensible - Wot (1983) location?[edit]

Anyone know where the music video was recorded and what hotel it was? ~ best thanks. 157.157.45.139 (talk) 01:48, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't say anything about the music video in either, sadly. ~ 157.157.45.139 (talk) 11:57, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Recorded at TMC Studios,[1][2] the studio of producer Tony Mansfield. According to Captain Sensible, the number was even written in the studio.[3]  --Lambiam 16:33, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The OP was asking about the video, not the song. DuncanHill (talk) 16:41, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
At 1:51–1:52, the video shows the monogram EH on the front door, in golden letters and topped with a golden crown (as a sign of royal recognition of excellence?). That should narrow down the search a bit.  --Lambiam 17:13, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, was thinking of the location of the music video and hotel itself. Well spotted btw Lambian, thank you- I've tried looking up Hotels in london and in a quick glance couldn't find it, but then again might be in a different city~ 157.157.45.139 (talk) 19:30, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There is the Elizabeth Hotel, aka the London Elizabeth Hotel, but none of the images I could find contained any definitive matching details. Of course, decor can change in 38-ish years, but the architecture of the entrance and its pavement level in the video don't seem to correspond to that building. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.200.40.121 (talk) 10:35, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
None of several Edward Hotels appear to have matching images either.  --Lambiam 12:54, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ask him on Twitter, he's pretty active there. [4] --Viennese Waltz 10:49, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I did! both facebook & twitter, my message was seen on facebook and the twitter message hasn't been responded to either. the location seems industrial/in the outskirts, or not in central London, might be a different city. 157.157.45.139 (talk) 16:55, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation of Sam Mendes[edit]

Hi! I'm a French speaker and I don't know how to pronounce Mendes in English. It could be Mendees, Mendis or Mendés. Could anybody add it to the article? Ericdec85 (talk) 07:57, 7 February 2021 (UTC) Thanks! Ericdec85 (talk) 07:57, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In this interview,[5] the interviewer calls him "Mr. Mendes" at about 20 seconds in. He pronounces it "MEN-dez", and the director does not correct him. Also, to this native English speaker, that sounds right. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 08:43, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In listing the candidates for the Oscar 2000 Best Director award, Steven Spielberg first seems to say "Sam MEN-dez", but then, in announcing the winner, he says, "and the Oscar goes to ... Sam MEN-deez", and in the next sentence again "Sam MEN-deez", rhyming with "Wendy's".[6] Both are plausible pronunciations, but "MEN-deez" seems (very slightly) more plausible. To be sure, we need either an authoritative source, or an audio of how he himself says his name.  --Lambiam 15:56, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the man himself: "I'm Sam MEN-dez". I can't remember ever hearing his name pronounced any other way. --Antiquary (talk) 18:00, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The short vowel is the usual British English pronunciation of the name as far as I know. There was a long and stupid joke (maybe a feghoot?} during the run-up to the 1982 Falklands War about the Argentinian foreign minister, Nicanor Costa Méndez, which I can't remember except for the punch-line: "He only wants to know how much it Costa Méndez trousers!" :-) Alansplodge (talk) 00:52, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
