April 27[edit]

Tildes on edit page[edit]

There are several objects across the bottom of an edit page, one of which says "Sign your posts on talk pages: ~~~~" I would have thought it would somehow create the four tildes for the signature. However, when I click on it, all it does is put me inside the edit window. In fact, all of the symbols seem to do the same thing. Any idea what the purpose is? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 23:34, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

When I press the tilde block it gives me four tildes wherever the cursor is. Same with the other symbols. Loraof (talk) 23:58, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for explaining. It appears to only work with the newer version of the interface. I still use the older version because I like its look better, but the tilde thing won't work, alas. And why do I need it? Because the tilde key on my keyboard no longer works. Alas. But I can still copy-and-paste from that symbol on the edit screen. I also have {{YesAutosign}} turned on, in case I forget to sign. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 00:01, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The OP should (as he knows) just type the 4 tildes to sign his post. I'm not sure why he is asking at the Reverence desk. I would think that this would be the place to ask if he is actually experiencing a problem. 75.146.23.101 (talk) 00:08, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As I already said, the tilde key no longer works. Feel free to worry about your own competence. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 00:10, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
When I tried clicking the four tildes, without having made any change to the page or even clicking on it to insert my cursor, the four tildes appeared at the very start of the page. That is, inserted at the top immediately before the section title. It also worked properly when I signed this post. Akld guy (talk) 01:08, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's how it works on the newer interface. It seems that it doesn't work on the older interface, so dat's dat. Thanks to all, for your help.

Bugs thought this was the Irreverence Desk. A natural mistake. —Tamfang (talk) 04:55, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
