The cause(s) of schizophrenia are unknown, but it is known that using psychoactive drugs during teen years or young adulthood increases the risk, so it is best to avoid these. See further the article Risk factors of schizophrenia and the section Schizophrenia § Prevention. The Reference desk does not give medical advice; if you are worried, talk to your doctor.  --Lambiam 21:40, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Firefighting

[edit]

Is it true that house fires happen more often in cold and/or snowy weather? If so, why? (Question inspired by Ladder 49). 2601:646:9882:46E0:A899:1187:7D82:CC7B (talk) 23:37, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cooking fires peak in the U.S. at Thanksgiving. The Christmas/Hanukkah season results in Christmas tree fires and candle fires. Cold weather results in an increase in house fires caused by malfunctioning and misused space heaters and fireplaces. Half of all such heating device fires take place in December, January and February. Here is an article. Cullen328 (talk) 23:50, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Unusually heavy snow and extreme wind can knock down trees that often bring down electrical power lines and if a house is hit, gas lines can be severed. This, too, can cause fires. Cullen328 (talk) 23:56, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
