Request on 02:36:19, 14 June 2017 for assistance on AfC submission by MitchDarrell3[edit]

My article has been declined 3 times because of references.

Hello, Mitch. Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia. And yes, your submission has been declined three times because of its shallow referencing. I encourage you to read through our guidance at WP:Reliable sources. Doing so will help make clear that references such as Facebook, YouTube or Instagram really don't count for much here on Wikipedia. And you might also want to take a look at WP:MUSICBIO, which sets forth the criteria that we typically look at when assessing the notability of a musician. Right now, your draft doesn't indicate satisfaction of any of those criteria. And on a few other notes, your submission includes an awful lot of what we call "in-article external links". These are links that are inside the main text of the article, but that send the reader outside of Wikipedia. These types of links generally are not acceptable and need to be removed (in some cases, you might be able to convert them to footnote references). Also, your draft runs afoul of some of the basic elements of our Manual of Style, especially with regard to layout. I encourage you to work through our WP:Tutorial, which we provide information that will assist you in constructing a well-crafted article. And finally, writing an autobiography on Wikipedia is very much discouraged. Please take a look at WP:AUTO for more detail on this. I hope this response has been helpful. 07:16:03, 14 June 2017 review of submission by Suresh2489[edit]

Hi

My Submission was declined by the reviewer stating that it looks like an advertisment. Though the article was written from a neutral point of view with independent , reliable and published sources, such as BW Business World, Business Standard, Livemint etc. Please help me understand which part of the article looks promotional so that I can rectify it.

User:Suresh2489 - There isn't very much to your draft. I should have noted that it has both notability issues and tone issues. The tone issues are that it reads like an information brochure about the foundation, and doesn't say very much about the foundation. It isn't necessary to identify the Kanorias, for instance. However, just as importantly, corporate notability is based on what others have written about the organization. Have independent sources written about the Kanoria Foundation? Hello. I have completed the draft page "Hillbilly Golf (Gatlinburg)" and would like to know when it will be reviewed? It's been over a week I believe. Thank you 👍 2605:E000:6022:4500:7428:8DEB:E9BB:AA06 (talk) 12:29, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Just reviewed it as an exception, normally you should expect waits of three weeks-ish when we're under a high backlog, like we are now. jcc (tea and biscuits) 00:46, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I am looking to correct my first Wikipedia entry. I have worked in news, research and publishing and am a regular user of Wikipedia. As a result, I have great respect for the community and want to become a reliable contributor.

The feedback I received referenced the entry reading like an advertisement. To help me edit this entry and for future contributions, I am hoping for some additional specific guidance. I re-read the “Advertisements masquerading as articles” entry“ and do not believe it appears similar to "solicitations for a business, product or service, or are public relations pieces designed to promote a company or individual,” nor does it appear to have “sales-oriented language and external links to a commercial website.” It does seem to be similar to “legitimate articles about commercial entities.” Not disputing the reviewer's feedback, just trying to correct and learn for the future.

Virtually all the references I used came from 3rd party resources – media stories, financial information providers (Bloomberg, etc.), and, as such, are generally written from a neutral point of view. There is just one reference from a press release issued by this entity and none are from the company’s website. I would be grateful for any specific guidance. Again, I’m looking forward to contributing to the community. Thank you! DrewEditor55 (talk) 18:07, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@DrewEditor55: I was not the reviewer for your article but what immediately strikes me is the 'Current and former Kodiak portfolio companies' section which can be eliminated in its entirety and converted to prose with just a few most notable companies named. With regards to your references, I am particularly concerned about them, more so than the slight promotional tone. You have many many citations to PR Newswire and other press releases which is not useful as an independent source since it might as well come from a company website (in fact at a quick glance 90% seem to be press releases, but I haven't checked through all of them). They may be press releases published on a third party website but they are nevertheless press releases which means that they can't be used to show notability. jcc (tea and biscuits) 00:39, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
