Clean-up
Could someone revert the page sso it is the way it was before I tried adding my name to it! It is really messed up!
- never mind! Sorry everyone! Randfan 22:23, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Happy adminship day?
Do we wish those who celebrate the anniversary of their adminship? And if so, with what template? I propose the one below (needs a little bit of work) as a start, which I created so that User:Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington could thank those who voted in his RfA, and it seems suitable for almost anything. We could probably adapt all our current templates and just change the text+image. I'll keep this page updated. --Draicone (talk) 05:22, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- I agree. I've been thinking about this for some time, due to the fact that we generally need to make our own for the Adminship Day anniversaries...I think the template is going well so far. Keep up the good work! :) Michael 05:27, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- The 9th template converted is below, and I've created a new category that we have to remember to include in all the templates. Do I need Mr. Turcotte's approval to put these in the template space and list them on the project page, or do they count as minor edits? --Draicone (talk) 05:58, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- I'm wondering whether we should put the 'Don't forget to vote in our RfAs!' in there or not. Its not really relevant, its there as a gap filler but we probably don't need a gap filler right now. Without that section, I've created Template:Happy Adminship 2 (to mirror the numbers corresponding to styles for first edit day templates, and so that this doesn't seem like the adminship template) and added this, I'm waiting on Mr Turcotte's approval (FYI the only thing changed is the text, the category and the image). --Draicone (talk) 06:13, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- Looking at that, the RFA thing may be seen as...I don't know...I suppose it's fine, but it's a little weird. Let's see if we can think of something else to include in the blank space... Michael 06:26, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, and the template still says "Happy Birthday!" in the upper-left corner. Michael 06:27, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing this out, I've fixed it. The current template (my signature is only included as example, the template will sign your name and the current date):

- I approve all of these template. At the moment I am a little busy. If you know how to put templates on the project page, feel free to do so. Mr. Turcottetalk 18:11, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- (reset indent) I have added them to the project page. Since all members are screened, can't we just trust members to use their judgement and not require approval for templates that are conversions of current ones? If so, I might go and convert all the birthday templates to adminship ones. --Draicone (talk) 07:59, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- I have converted two birthday templates to adminship templates, and added them to the template space. --Draicone (talk) 08:27, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
quit
I have a quit reason I am working on.
It is at chrome://wikipedia/content/BDCquit.txt (only a few people can read that page) (I will publish the reason after I am ready and after i have put it through review (because it is a little un-WP:AGF like) )
GeorgeMoney (talk) 16:46, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- Uhh.. chrome:// is a Firefox protocol, so only people using your web browser on your PC can read that. And we don't mind if you quit, everyone has their reasons and we can't expect everyone to put in an enormous amount of effort into the project, but we'd appreciate if you gave us your reasons plain and simple. I personally won't feel offended or hurt no matter what your reasons are, and I can safely assume most other project members will be likewise. --Draicone (talk) 07:01, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks :)
Nice lift - some great user-happiness work going on here, and some fantastic templates! I might have to join... --Firien § 10:02, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- You should. Michael 07:06, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Header!
With all the various people contributing, making suggestions, adding templates etc., and since most significant discussion pages have one, how about a header? I took the liberty of coming up with a simple yet effective option, using the Nuvola icons (as always):
It scales beautifully (i.e. looks the same with varied window widths) and works for 2048x1536 all the way down to 800x600 (640x480 might wrap, but that's ok!). Please tell me what you think of it. --Draicone (talk) 09:19, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- And here's one for the members section on the main page:
- This general idea would actually be great for a birthday/first edit day/adminship wishing template, I'll see what I can do to port it. I've set my status to busy in the member listings as I'd like to focus on making templates and improving the project page, and there are enough members to wish people. -Draicone (talk) 09:35, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- These are nice! If you wish to place them on the pages, please do so. Mr. Turcottetalk 19:25, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thankyou for approval. I will begin rolling out these (and other) templates on the project and discussion pages. --Draicone (talk) 06:06, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

User box - left version
I ported the current userbox to a version with the cake on the left; with about 20 userboxes like this and one birthday committee userbox with an icon on the right i felt it stood out, and the standard is left, so I figured we should give users a choice. I chose to put it straight on the main page per Be Bold, please advise me if I broke an unwritten rule or something. --Draicone (talk) 09:51, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
More templates- Birthday
What about this one?
Happy Birthday!
It's pretty simple, but it will allow for more variation on user pages!

- This template looks fine to me. --Siva1979Talk to me 17:57, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
It looks alright. Does the signature work in the template? Mr. Turcottetalk 19:22, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- I like it, but whether the signature would work is a concern. Michael 22:38, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- I have checked and double checked the code. EvocativeIntrigue is using my standard system of two ~'s, then another two if the template is being included and another two if it is not (i.e. on display there will be 4 seemingly unbroken ~'s, but on include or subst the four tildes form the signature). I personally feel the border should go all the way around, it seems you've set border-left and border-bottom to 0px width. Still, congratulations on the brilliant template, EvocativeIntrigue! --Draicone (talk) 08:44, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you Everyone!
Thanks everyone for your hard work on making new templates and for gathering new members. As of now, it is hard to keep up with all of the new members, and I want to get the qualified users on on the member list ASAP. That is why I am now giving the ability for any user to welcome a member by using the {{subst:Birthday Welcome}} template. If you see a new user join, check their talk page. If they haven't been welcomed with the template, please use it and be sure that they meet the requirements. Please make them feel right at home.
Thanks again for all of your efforts. Mr. Turcottetalk 19:22, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

A Change of Strategy?
As many of you may have realised, the Birthday Committee is expanding rapidly, with new members, new templates and more activity. In fact, we're growing so quickly that at this rate we'll add 10kb to people's talk pages with greetings, wishes and the rest, with 20 odd members wishing each person. So to counter this effect, I propose that we convert all our templates to dynamic (I can help with this) so that instead of subst'ing templates, we are merely using this sort of code:
{{Happy Birthday 9|~~~~|Have a good day!}}
Where we specify the template, pass our signature to it dynamically (is this possible? i assume so..) and if we so desire add our own note to the template, so we end up having something like this on a person's talk page:
{{Happy Birthday 4|~~~~|Have a good day!}} {{Happy Birthday 6|~~~~|Best wishes!}} {{Happy Birthday 9|~~~~|Have a happy birthday!}}
Instead of (potentially) a hundred lines of code. I also propose that, not only do we wish members, we focus on encouraging Wikipedians to add their birthdays and other events to the Esparanza Calendar so that we do not have 50 members wishing 2 people every day. This could be done through a number of ways:
- Templates for members to add to their user page
- Notices in places like Esperanza, Village pump etc.
- Small notices in our signatures (e.g. Draicone (talk)BDC) (Maybe not the best idea due to the masses of links to this page)
- Other public places on Wikipedia
We should also aim to have our older members, who are more familiar with the process and the inner workings of the committee (e.g. the first ten or so members, or up to a few before me). In addition, we should allocate some people to work on things like the project page (i.e. layout, up to date information, new members?), the talk page (i.e. archiving old discussions, pointing out the not so obvious) but not limit these tasks to those allocated to them so as to ensure that these pages are of the highest quality. Once we have a lot of data, it may be best to put things like the calendar on sub pages of WP:BDC.
Please comment here, and rememeber that this is not official policy, merely a proposal of mine. (As is now fairly clear from my header at the top of this discussion page) --Draicone (talk) 09:01, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- One thing which could be done (if someone knows how?) Is change the "my birthday is on this date" userbox, so that it automatically adds people's birthday to the calendar when they add it to their userpage. I don't know if this would be possible? -Ladybirdintheuk 09:47, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- I don't like the template scheme, I don't use templates but choose to wish personally and individually instead. +Hexagon1 (t) 10:00, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Wishing personally is fine, either way most people will add a nice comment after the template. And it is possible, but not with the current calendar system - I'll see if I can find a way. --Draicone (talk) 10:05, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- I like the idea. Mr. Turcottetalk 01:31, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
I hink we should encourage more people to add their names to a calendar, but also limit one person to wishing somebody. So there is some work to go around, we then limit members to wishing one person per day. Jorcoga ETC. 11:27, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
New templates
Complimenting the streamlined border-contrast set-hue style of the headers I made, I've also created another template:
Please tell me what you think of it, Mr.Turcotte - please tell me if you approve it so that I can put it on the main page (do we really need approvals? WP:BOLD!). The code is {{subst:Happy Birthday 10}}. --Draicone (talk) 11:08, 3 August 2006 (UTC) (a day or so later) Made another template, for adminship:
Code is {{subst:Happy Adminship 5}}. Similar to one above, slightly different text and different image on the left. The calendar day image on the right is brilliant, I'll use it throughout the theme, especially if I make a first edit day template (which I may in a few minutes anyway). --Draicone (talk) 09:02, 4 August 2006 (UTC) (10 minutes later) I've simply ported the above two to a first edit day template:
Code is {{subst:First Edit Day 3}}. In case you're wondering that the signature system works:
In the above template, I've substed instead of permanently transcluded, as per the instructions provided on the template pages (Happy Adminship 5, Happy Birthday 10, First Edit Day 3). --Draicone (talk) 09:16, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
- I think that all of these look great. I approve. They give a little more "wow" than the other templates. Please feel free to add them. Mr. Turcottetalk 18:21, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Archive!
This discussion page seriously needs to be archived. It is over 40kb long, so we should at least archive the first 20 discussions (which, coincidentally, use up about 70% of that 40kb). I suggest creating /Archive 1 and using the usual archival system for indexing archives. --Draicone (talk) 11:08, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
The Birthday Committee Bulletin
I have updated it. It seemed to be in need of an update :), so I went ahead and did it. Hope it's all right. Thistheman 04:48, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
- It looks fine. I think we need to move the template from BDC Bulletin 1 to BDC Bulletin as we always update the same template anyway. Thanks for acknowledging my headers :) --Draicone (talk) 09:17, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for updating it. Feel free to do so in the future. Mr. Turcottetalk 18:16, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, guys
Thanks so much for my birthday greeting. One of the first things I did sfter registering was to add my name to the list of birthdays on meta, so this is my second greeting. And three at once! I feel special. Thanks again. —Vanderdecken∴ ∫ξφ 10:53, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Archiving...
I am beginning an archive that Draicone requested earlier. Check the top of the page. -- Heaven's Wrath Talk 01:40, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for doing that, the page really needed it. Where is Mr Turcotte, by the way? He hasn't shown up in a while and we may have to have someone else take over the project. Then again, I suppose we don't need management at all if everyone cooperates. Anyone seen him? --Draicone (talk) 06:24, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hey everyone. I'm sorry about the lengthy leave. I went on a week long vacation and left in a hurry without getting on Wikipedia to tell you. I'm sorry about that. Thanks for archiving the talk page. Mr. Turcottetalk 01:29, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
Joining
I quit earlier because I thought I wasn't giving enough b-day wishes to users, so I thought I had no purpose here. But, now I want to rejoin, so can Mr. Turcotte please approve me? thanks! GeorgeMoney (talk) 03:55, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
- Sure! We'd love to have you back. Mr. Turcottetalk 20:50, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
your categories
Your three collector categories ("WIkipedians wished a...") are up on CfD at Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_September_1#Wikipedia_Birthday_Committee. Folks there seem inclined to delete the categories, but I was wondering if they served an administrative purpose or were otherwise necessary to you. If so, please speak up.--Mike Selinker 14:11, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- Given the fact that there are many categories on Wikipedia of a similar caliber, it seems odd to pick these apart when they are just as pertinent as the majority of others. I have expressed my thoughts on the CfD. Michael 04:10, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
I’m Back!
I just thought I’d check in on the BDC, and I am amazed with the progress. In fact, I won’t be reclaiming my position as Birthday Committee Leader for a few weeks. Keep up the fantastic work, and I hope to make my official return on September 10 as planned. Steveo2 15:37, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
Membership Requirements
I'm back, as mentioned directly above. Anyway, I noticed that the membership requirements have been lowered. While I'm personally okay with the new ones, I think that requirements should remain above a certain level, as to prevent vandalism left in the name of the BDC. I think that a system should be set up for the changing of rules like this, perhaps a voting system should be enacted. As founder of the committee, (though technically no longer in charge,) I will set up a discussion subpage on this topic. Steveo2 19:28, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Please see this page: Wikipedia Talk:Birthday Committee/Membership Requirements to voice your opinion on the subject. Steveo2 11:13, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Possible merger with Esperanza
Hello everyone,
I would just like to commend this project for its wonderful participation and purpose. You guys have started a great idea on Wikipedia. I can see that many of you are Esperanzians, and would like to invite you to join the newly renovated Birthday Campaign at Esperanza. It seems silly to have two projects concentrated on the same goal. The only differences are that the membership requirements would be changed to the requirements set forth by the Esperanza charter. The templates could be ported as well as leadership and your system of approval of new templates. I wanted to wait for Steveo2 to return before asking. I think your cause will reach more people and will help spread WikiLove. I am open to discuss this here.

help cleaning up templates
ON Sept 1, CFD agreed to delete categories transcluded by the project templates. See here. But this project has many tempaltes, some of them still including (and then recreating) the categories. Could someone lend a hand checkign all the project templates and removign the categorieS? -- Drini 21:10, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- I'm pretty sure that the categories have now all been removed. I just did the last one. (That's the only one I did, though, so I'm not taking credit for anything.) Steveo2 18:52, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
