I would like to write my article on "The Sonny Comedy Revue," a TV variety show starring Sonny Bono that ran in the mid-70s. The show was created after he and his former wife, Cher, divorced and their joint variety show The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour was subsequently cancelled. The show was a failure and was taken off the air after only six episodes. Knicoladyes (talk) 12:25, 30 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Knicoladyes: Sounds like a fantastic idea. As you probably saw, there's a subsection of the article on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour that talks about it (although it's really just a short paragraph). You might use that as a jumping-off point for an article on the subject and you would certainly want to link the article from there. —mako 17:38, 30 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there! Not 100% sure what I would like to write about but I found a stub that needs editing - Conjure One and then there is a red link for "Cocteaufest". It is an annual festival for fans of the band Cocteau Twins. I am aging myself when saying it, but this was a band I listened to in college. Festival occurs annually in different locations. I have never been, but it looks like fun. Andrew Thiessen (talk) 02:03, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Andrew Thiessen: The Conjure One stub looks pretty developed but I'm sure you could work on if you want. You might want to take a look around to see if there is coverage of the Cocteaufest event in the media. If you can find a few articles in reliable sources, it sounds like a great thing to work on. —mako 18:38, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm still pondering a few options, but I'm thinking of writing about The Sun Magazine. This is a relatively unknown magazine that I've been reading for more years than I'd like to admit, and there's definitely more information that could be filled in on the page. Yoginih (talk) 03:14, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Yoginih: The Sun Magazine sounds like a great article to expand and there's really not too much there now. One key will be doing research in the history of the magazine and finding coverage of it in other sources. That said, I think this is a rich opportunity to contribute. —mako 18:40, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Mako, I'm thinking about expanding on the stub: "Hard Count (football)", I can think of a few links and examples to be used to edit it.Liamqc (talk) 03:43, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Liamqc: This looks like a great article to expand. I'm only vaguely familiar with the concept so I would love to read a greatly expanded article! —mako 18:41, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! My name is Tara Nielson and I would like to write my post on/make edits to Tibetan Buddhism. More specifically, I would like to focus on the philosophies about karma and compassion. Tara Nielson (talk) 17:46, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Niels115: Greetings Tara! So, that article is already in pretty great shape. Are you proposing to expand those sections within the main article or maybe write another new article on a sub-topic related to compassion or philosophy? In the spirit of the excercise, I would have a preference if you do the latter. —mako 18:44, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply Mako. I would like to write a sub-article on compassion and karma. Or should I choose just one? Let me know what sounds better, thanks! Tara Nielson (talk) 05:34, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all! I'm Kate Negley and I'm interested in expanding the stub article Design education. It looks like it is off to a great start but I believe I can add something to enhance the article. I plan to elaborate on the different types of design education and what an education in design might look like. KateNegley (talk) 21:15, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@KateNegley: Sounds awesome! —mako 22:17, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello everyone. Charles Kiene here. Forgive the weird username--I've used it for somewhat keeping anonymity when gaming. I would like to write an article on Creepypasta. I've definitely been a fan of it for several years and know (to an extent) a lot about its origins, most prominent memes (smile.jpg, WHOWASPHONE?, etc.), and the different websites supporting creepypasta (/r/nosleep, creepypasta.wikia, MarbleHornets, etc.) Nozkrov (talk) 03:02, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Nozkrov: The trick, as always in Wikipedia, is to ensure that you have reliable sources to establish notability. This is always the case but in practice it's more a problem when people think that someone might be creating a "vanity" page. If the label has been covered or discussed in local or music media, you should be alright. If you can find sources to support this, might find it a little tricky. —mako 21:34, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As I said in my edit, my article will be on the internet phenomenon known as "creepypasta". No one has submitted an article on it yet, and the term has been used in the Associated Press, New York Times, Huffington Post, etc. It definitely needs its own page. My only issue right now is that it is a very ambiguous term; it is a blend of memes and urban legends and hoaxes. It is also anthropological as it bends toward cultural taboos, death, spirits, and how the modern internet user interprets the unknown. While I could certainly write a lengthy ethnography on this topic, I was thinking that the Wikipedia page should remain as concise as possible while also covering all of the various sub-types of creepypasta. I foresee my page being edited for years to come. Nozkrov (talk) 17:55, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Nozkrov: This sounds fantastic. I'm looking forward to seeing your article! —mako 20:07, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy everyone! I'm Kevin Toovey and I'm interested in creating an article on PetSmart Charities, a non-profit organization that is separate from PetSmart (many people assume they're one in the same). I plan on writing about founding/history, significance in pet homelessness, and how donations are used. :) --Pnwkev (talk) 20:02, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Pnwkev: Sounds interesting. See my advice to User:Nozkrov above as I think it applies to your case a little as well. My sense is that it the charity is going to rouse a little concern than a record label but the same guidelines may apply and be useful. —mako 21:37, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, everyone! I'm Mike Fate and I would like to write my article on the Seattle hard rock band, Witchburn. I've seen them perform live and they are awesome! I also have a couple of their CD's and I'm willing to bet they have an impressive Reverbnation site. There is nothing about them on Wikipedia, except that they performed as an opening act during the 2013 Uproar Festival. Mfate87 (talk) 16:09, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

@Mfate87: Read through the criteria for notability for bands at WP:BAND. If you think that you can demonstrate this level of notability, lets go ahead. If you think it might be difficult to establish Notability under Wikipedia's policies, you might want to choose a different topic. —mako 22:48, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mako, I am thinking about writing my article on either LAW PreDiscovery or Early Data Analyzer. These applications are used in the Electronic Discovery world mainly in legal settings. There is already an article on my current employer (LexisNexis) so I was thinking I could insert a section in there somewhere or add under "See Also." I'm just wondering how I would go about getting citations. The article would cover what the application is, what it does, who is using it, how people are using it, etc. What do you think?Elephant 16 (talk) 17:40, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Elephant 16: Cool! If either of these products has been covered in the media and you think you can establish [WP:N|notability]] with reliable sources, lets go for it. —mako 22:48, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mako! It's Michèle and I have several ideas for my article but am not wildly enthusiastic about any of them. I could add some missing information to existing articles on (aircraft) emergency landing and water landing as family members executed both maneuvers successfully, and both events are missing from the articles. It probably isn't enough to meet the assignment objectives. I could rewrite and expand upon a very-poorly written article on fire safety. I could expand on stubs for Suquamish Tribe (unmarked as a stub, but clearly so), Eglon, Washington or Port Madison. Finally, I could write the article on my employer -- North Kitsap Fire & Rescue -- as there is none at this time. That might be a form of vanity writing since it's a part of my job to promote the department, but it might also win me some points at work. :) Thanks in advance for your input! Mlaboda (talk) 18:19, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Mlaboda: I think you could make any of these work. Place-based stubs should be easy because there are no notability issues. I think that fixing the fire safety article would be great too. I think you could totally write an article (not just a subsection) on either emergency landing or water landing and it would be a great contribution to the encyclopedia. I agree that conflict of interest might be a concern with North Kitsap Fire & Rescue although if you make your conflict clear, it would probably work. It really depends on what you want. I you are leaning towards doing a North Kitsap Fire & Rescue, it might be good to ask User:Peaceray this about this on Monday. —mako 22:48, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Friday, @Benjamin Mako Hill: I'm really interested in promoting local non-profits and have decided that I would like to work on the stubs for Seattle Works and Washington Tilth Association. I have no personal or professional affiliation with either of these organizations, but would like to support their efforts by providing information about their missions and program activities. I happen to know Tara Smith is no longer Seattle Works' Executive Director, so the stub could use an update. Oh, @Andrew Thiessen: I was also listening to Cocteau Twins in college, so I am looking forward to reading about Cocteaufest! Uclisa (talk) 04:43, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Uclisa: Either of these sounds like awesome articles and since there are already stubs, you should be in good shape to improve them. —mako 05:12, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Benjamin Mako Hill:, I've got a lot of ideas for my wikipedia article, so I feel like I'm still narrowing it down a bit. I would either like to write about a group like the Modern Quilt Guild or Society of Glass Beadmakers or write about a company like Fusion Beads or Beaducation and try to look into how they try to form communities in their own online environments and whether or not they are successful. --Kewall27 (talk) 06:23, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Kewall27: Keep the rules of notability and reliable sources in mind. If you think any of these topics will work, I think they all sound interesting! —mako 18:06, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Benjamin Mako Hill:, I'm changing gears a bit, I found a stub article on Trade Bead that needs some help. I'm hoping I can find a lot of info to add to this article. Will you let me know if that sounds ok? --Kewall27 (talk) 17:20, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

After sifting through some of the stubs I found one called, Mt. Baker Legendary Banked Slalom, that I would like to write an article on. This is a local snowboard event that occurs at Mt. Baker at the end of every winter season. The event consists of huge race course filled with banked walls, jumps, and whoops, The fastest time takes the duct tape trophy and embroidered jacket home. World class snowboarders show up to compete every year. --SleeepyD (talk) 06:45, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@SleeepyD: That sounds fantasic. I look forward to see that article expanded and it sure looks like this can be a great contribution. BTW, I've moved your comment down to the bottom of the section from the top (I suppose there is kind of anorm to start writing at the bottom) and unindented your comment. I'm using a single ":" so that my response is indented under yours. —mako 06:50, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mako! After sifting through some of the wanted wikipedia articles, I would like to write about what is known as the Kangaroo Pocket. I'm very interested in fashion, many sweatshirts have this pocket, and I'm very surprised that is is not on Wikipedia already. I think it would a short article, but definitely a useful contribution. Let me know what you think! Zoebloom (talk) 21:54, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Zoebloom: Sounds great! I'm also suprised it's not on Wikipedia yet! —mako 03:03, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mako! I would like to expand the Wikipedia article for Independencia_(film), I found it on the list of stubs. The director, Raya Martin, is one of the foremost new directors from the Philippines, and Independencia has been featured as well as won awards in some International film fests, such as Cannes and New York Film Festival. Hope this is okay, thanks! Mushpatatas (talk) 14:33, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Mushpatatas: Sounds fantastic. I think this will be a very successful project. —mako 20:05, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Mako. Im thinking about writing my article on the Wolverhampton City Marathon. It is an event based in Wolverhampton, England. Some of the events include full marathon, half marathon, 19.5km cycle event and fun run. I was thinking about writing about the origin of the event and some of its history including past winners and hopefully some controversy. This article was requested in the request article page. I hope this is alright. JPEspi (talk) 04:36, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@JPEspi: Great. I don't forsee you running any problems with this. —mako 20:05, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mako. I would like to expand the article for Asiana Airlines Flight 733's demise. The article was in the list of stubs but it looks like it was worked on afterwards. I would like to add some additional details and evidence to what happened on that day. The other option that has less info is China Airlines Flight 206 's page. Please let me know. Xxdboixx (talk) 16:27, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Xxdboixx: I like the idea of starting from scratch so might have a slight preference for China Airlines Flight 206. That said, Asiana Airlines Flight 733 only has one citation so I think you'll be able to do that successfully as well. Either one would be OK. —mako 20:05, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mako, I would like to write about the Executive Women's Golf Association, the largest amateur women's golf association in the US. There are chapters in most states and host the largest women's amateur golf tournament. The organization is 25 years old. What do you think? KEGrowdon

@KEGrowdon: I think Executive Women's Golf Association sounds like a good match. It seems like you should have no trouble getting enough in the way of reliable sources. —mako 20:05, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mako, I would like to write about a prominent Gambian musician called Jaliba Kuyateh [wikipedia article]. His name is mentioned but there is no article about him. He is also referenced in this article about Kora which is the musical instrument he plays. Gambia being a very small country, I am worried about notability. Please let me know what you think. Aidaja12 (talk) 06:37, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Aidaja12: I think if you can find reliable sources — major newspapers in Gambia should work — it will work. I think you should try! Are there any articles in Gambian language Wikipedias? —mako 20:05, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mako, I finally came up with a topic that does not exist in Wikipedia. It is for NUMTI Dobrin Petkov, which is the National Music school of my city Plovdiv , Bulgaria . I attended this school for four years and it would mean a lot to me if I could create their own Wikipedia page. They offer different music programs and I can include them in my article. The school has a website, which I could possibly use as a source and also a lot of articles from different Bulgarian newspapers. lap91 (talk) (UTC)

@Lap91: This should work. The thing to read is Wikipedia:Notability (high schools) which explains how to establish notability for a high shcool. Many articles on high schools have been challenged on notability groups although Wikipedian's almost always decide to keep articles.

Hi Mako, I think I could finally find something to write about and it haven't exist at Wikipedia. It is the Hong Kong student Association at UW which has established for 10 years. They provide different types of activities and help for HK students, also cultural events that help others to know more about Hong Kong. Phoebepoonn (talk) 06:17, 11 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Phoebepoonn: As long as you can establish the notability of the article, this should work. The relevant policy is probably Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). —mako 18:41, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mako, My name is Yibo Lu. I am going to create a new topic about the square dancing (Guang Chang Wu) in China, which is often seen as a new phenomenon that hundreds of senior ladies dance in a public square for health and companionship. This new national activity is well-known worldwide and reported by New York Times, China Daily, CNN, BBC and so on. Due to the fact that it is a new cultural product in China, it comes with many debates and ruckus. Please tell me if this topic works, thanks a lot! Yibo719

@Yibo719: If those debates are happening in reliable sources like major newspapers, I think you should have no trouble establishing notability. —mako 18:41, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Professor - I would like to expand the article on EDM (Electronic Dance Music), particularly the Festivals section. It is extremely vague, outdated and incomplete. I work in the industry and would love to make a contribution about something I'm passionate about! ElizavetaSouslova (talk) 21:03, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@ElizavetaSouslova: So, that section links to a few other pages including List of electronic dance music festivals and List of electronic music festivals. The goal here would be to create a new section of the article (i.e., the narrative part) that is currently at Electronic dance music#Festivals, right? That sounds good although if you add citations and descriptions, you might actually just creating a new article Electronic dance music festivals. —mako 18:41, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to do an article on my high school, Elsinore High School in Wildomar, California. The three surroundings schools have wikipages. --Jaitlin206 (talk) 20:07, 7 October 2014 (UTC)Jaitlin206[reply]

@Jaitlin206: See my comments to User:lap91 above and definitely read Wikipedia:Notability (high schools) to make sure you can clear the notability bar. Sounds great though! —mako 18:41, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote about Park Design and Public Safety - just a summary, with lots of references (plan to add more.) Saved the page - did that make it "Live"?Urban walker (talk)

Greetings Urban walker! I've moved stuff around a little bit so that your article in your User:Urban walker/sandbox (your sandbox) and I left some messages on the talk page associated with the sandbox article draft. —mako 00:56, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Message from User:Peaceray (guest speaker for 10/6)

[edit]

Howdy, everybody, Peaceray (talk) here. Because some of the influences on my life from my mid-twenties to mid-thirties may be obscure, here are several relevant Wikilinks in advance of Monday evening, 10/6. After college, I lived in several collective households, one of which aspired to becoming an intentional community. During this period, I also explored consensus decision-making and alternative organizations through Quaker friends, taking consensus training from Movement for a New Society members, visiting communes and ashrams, and, most influential to me, attending over a dozen Rainbow Gatherings and helping to organize a few. I have served on the boards of two food cooperatives. So, lots of preparation in cooperation and consensus ... Peaceray (talk) 00:44, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Peaceray, for taking the time to bring your considerable experience with Wikipedia into our classroom last evening! Mlaboda (talk) 04:33, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone know where to post our contents in our personal sandboxes that is due tomorrow? Do we use this same "talk" Page? The syllabus says : Add your sandboxed article to the class’s course page with the template. Elephant 16 (talk) 03:49, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Another small contribution is to add the same incident to the Douglas DC-7 page under the Accidents and Incidents section. And, I added a paragraph on the first landing of a B-747 at CFB Comox on that place-page. Please note that I plan to add additional articles on other topics to my sandbox later.

Finally, I've added a brand new full article (instead of adding to existing ones as above) to the main space, and it's already been reviewed/accepted! It's about the local air ambulance company, Airlift Northwest. Mlaboda (talk) 15:26, 19 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Finding Sources

[edit]

A number of you have contacted me about finding reliable sources to establish notability for your articles. References in scholarly publications or major newspapers are an excellent way to do this but, unfortunately, normal web search isn't necessarily very good at finding these.

The UW Libraries have tons of resources to help you do research. For example, they have this really great guide to finding e-newspapers. In the past, I've used LexisNexis Academic, ProQuest, and Factiva very successfuly to find descriptions of a topic published in major newspapers. Google Scholar is a great way to find scholarly work. In general, the UW libraries' page on starting your research is a good place to start. If you are getting stuck, don't hesitate to contact a reference librarian. —mako 18:11, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I was at the Allen and Suzzallo libraries yesterday, and got great source material from newspapers on microfiche as well as from the library's huge archive of government publications. The folks there are SO helpful! Mlaboda (talk) 19:05, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You can also pop in at #wikipedia-en-help connect (just press connect, or read the disclaimer first), and possibly I might be there. I have access to http://newspapers.com/ , if you would like to search for something. But that's only if you are lucky and that I'm there at that current time. Tips for Moving Articles

[edit]

Here's a quick tip for when you move your articles. Some people have noticed that the template that marks articles as being a class article "dissappears" in a way. Basically, the template is programmed so that it is hidden in "live" articles. What you need to do is cut and paste that coures assignment template from the main page onto the talk page associated with your article. You should all do this when you move your article live. I've noticed that for some people, this has been done already. I did it for a couple articles and I noticed that other editors on Wikipedia had done it in some other cases. That said, it's be good to do this yourself when you move the article. —mako 23:03, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Washington Tilth Association

Hello,
My name (here on Wikipedia) is Josve05a. It has come to my attention that Uclisa has added materials on Washington Tilth Association which includes copyrighted materials from
Wikipedia can't have any copyrighted material (exceptions like fair use images exist) on its site..
I might (as I sometimes are) be wrong, and I would be glad if you responded here regaring this issue.
I have reverted the page to it's former status and requested a revision deletion from the page history, to comply with copyright laws.
Happy editing! (tJosve05a (c) 23:36, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Josve05a! The user actually brought this up yesterday and we established that it was a problem, that it would need be fixed, and make it clear how it would need to be fixed. Thanks for going ahead with the revision deletion though as we already knew that we were going to have to request that. I think we should be set here. —mako 23:48, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Josve05a Well, everybody should have worked through the tutorial which spends one of the major sections on copyright. I will remind folks again. Thanks again for helping out with this. —mako 02:37, 17 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Josve05a Thank you so much for figuring out the problems. Due to the fact that my topic is a kind of new culture product/ phenomenon in China, it doesn't have any information from the books or journals. I used to think that the reliable sources from major newspapers could be fine to establish notability, however, I didn't realize that most of the websites have the copyright. I will try my best to fix this issue. Thanks! Yibo719 (talk) 19:24, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Yibo719: Those citations and references are fantastic and you should include them and keep citing them. You should include the references and the links, you just cannot include the actual text from the articles. Go ahead and work through the tutorial sections on copyright and references again to get an idea for what the issue is if you're still unclear. —mako 21:49, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Issues Moving Page to Main space

[edit]

I just attempted to move my sandbox article to the Wikipedia main space, and I was blocked by a wall of error messages: screenshot of error messages. Little did I know that the "Creepypasta" article has been protected since 2013. I can try to post it in the "Requested Moves" section, but it has a huge backlog; there's no way this will get moved to the Main space in time for me to complete our assignments. I'm posting a technical move request, but I don't know if this is going to work. Nozkrov (talk) 20:55, 17 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Nozkrov: Thanks for letting me know! If you go the redirect page itself at redirect page itself you can find the talk page at Talk:Creepypasta. The thing to notice there is that previous version of the article were discussed and deleted twice at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Creepypasta (2nd nomination) (2013) and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Creepypasta (2008). It sounds like in 2008, the article was found to non-notable but things have clearly changed and the phenomena has become more important. In 2013, many people voting for deletion felt that the phenomena might be notable but that the article itself was not particularly encyclopedic. I think that a request for move is probably the the correct thing to do here but that might be wrong. If you read through the discussion you should get a sense for what the problems were and what your article will need to improve or address to overcome these concerns.
That said, because the article was deleted before, there will be more scrutiny on it and you're going to need to be careful about getting the article into shape and including as much in the way of reliable sources to establish notability as you can. For the moment, don't worry about moving it into the article namespace and the deadline for doing that. Others can review your article in your sandbox. Do look into figuring out how to start the conversation about moving this article in. The goal of moving things into the article namespace is begin engaging with the Wikipedia community. There are other ways to do this. —mako 21:59, 17 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Benjamin Mako Hill: Okay, thank you. I started up a discussion on it in Talk:Creepypasta. Hopefully people are watching that page!░ nozkrov ░talk 03:43, 19 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Task #5

[edit]

Has anyone completed this assignment? I have a question about the second part of our assignment..Does anyone know if we need to copy the articles we are reviewing and make the edits? To our Sandbox?

Wikipedia Task #5: Peer review other students' articles

Due Date: Friday October 24 Deliverables: Make contributions in Wikipedia

1. Peer review two of your classmates’ articles. Leave suggestions on the article talk pages.

Cruel People on Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi Mako, Someone submitted a request for a "speedy deletion" for my article..It looks like it got denied because someone else responded saying it is a valid article. I am still working on updating the citations/references. Thought I'd give you a heads up. The messages are on my User Talk page. I don't know if anyone else ran into this issue. Elephant 16 (talk) 23:23, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Elephant 16:I saw that this happened but it was well after the fact and it had already been addressed. I know this can be traumatic and believe me, this has happened to me many times. The best way to address this to try to address their concerns. Usually (and in your case as well), I think finding coverage of Law PreDiscovery in reliable sources to establish notability is the best route to prevent this kind of stuff in the future. —mako 21:32, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

/cc to Benjamin Mako Hill and Rabbit white

I'm looking at File:Trucks and Machines.jpg and File:Bunny pancakes.jpg (both added for the Saipancakes article and I don't think either of them have information from the source on the license. Normally for images like these the source where you find the image should have information on which license it is released under (like a Creative Commons license). Otherwise the content is assumed to by copyrighted with all rights reserved and we can't use it on wikipedia. Can either of you help find some source information so we can keep these images or otherwise if they're not Free we can remove them from the article, delete them and try to find a free replacement. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:43, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Rabbit white: (/cc to Adam (Wiki Ed)) If those images weren't explicitly freely licensed, what you might want to do is contact the owner (presumably, the person runs the Saipancakes website) and ask him if he would be willing to release one or more of those images under a free license like the Creative Commons Attribute-ShareAlike license. If you can get an email him saying this, you can upload the images or we can have them undeleted. Those images were really very helpful so I think it would be worth giving a try. —mako 21:35, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Benjamin Mako Hill: How do we know if the images are freely licensed? I talked to Mr. Shields over the weekend, he said the article look pretty good. I contacted him over the facebook. I do not know if that is ok with the Wikipedia editor?

Rabbit white (talk) 22:27, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Rabbit white: Usually a website will include license information for everything in the footer somewhere or for images will include it on the specific image page. For freely licensed works you're looking for a license which is compatible with the creative commons share-alike license. If there isn't one on the site, it can be added easily or you can ask Mr. Shields to send an email as described here, that way we can record that the license is correct even if the original source doesn't include the same license. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:40, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Adam (Wiki Ed): I will ask Mr. Shields about the license information later this week, thank you for your information. Rabbit white (talk) 23:19, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Asiana Airlines Flight 733

[edit]

It looks like a similar problem arose for this article, though the images were on commons. I'm not a commons admin so I can't see the deleted description page. Were these images Free but with the source information missing, meaning could we add images to this article if we did some digging or are the images confirmed to be non-free.
