Wikimedia projects still use texvc, e.g. this very project[edit]

Special:Version shows that we are using the Math extension, which in turn uses texvc. Moreover we certainly are not using MathJax for non-logged-in editors; the preferences currently say that MathJax is "experimental" and it is not the default option. — Carl (CBM · talk) 12:16, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly, some remains persisted. But is it anything more than a wrapper over LaTeX→dvipng? <math>→HTML conversion is discontinued (the only its legacy is class="texhtml"), and MathJax uses it own <math> renderer. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 13:29, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think they removed it from the default set of extensions in the Mediawiki release, but they kept it on the live projects. Yes, at the moment texvc is basically being used as a wrapper around LaTeX and dvipng, but it also has its own syntax that it converts to regular LaTeX syntax first, which is one reason why it is difficult to get rid of the texvc layer. So although we use a more limited set of texvc features right now, we still rely on texvc for our rendering the PNG images that non-logged-in users all see. — Carl (CBM · talk) 14:00, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why do Wikimedia projects use texvc to create PNG files rather than SVG?[edit]

Mathematical expressions in general look pretty bad on Wikipedia because the PNG doesn't scale well, so therefore the expressions are usually misproportioned with respect to the text. What is the objection to SVG? Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 22:01, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I guess you use Firefox or compatible? Set browser.enable_automatic_image_resizing = false in about:config. If this will not help, go to WP:Village pump (technical): your posting here is off-topical (texvc is gradually superseded with MathJax and is not developed) and I will not discuss it further at this Wikipedia_talk page.
