William Vainqueur (born 19 November 1988) is a French professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Ligue 1 club Marseille, on loan from Roma.

Club career

Early career

Born in Neuilly-sur-Marne, a commune in the eastern suburbs of Paris, Vainqueur joined Noisy-le-Grand FC at the age of 8. In 2001 he moved to the youth system of Auxerre. After one year, he returned to his birthplace, playing for Bussy-Saint-Georges FC. There he was discovered at the age 14 by FC Nantes. He progressed through youth system and in May 2007 signed his first professional contract with the Ligue 1 club.[2][3][4]

Nantes

Having progressed through the youth system at Nantes, Vainqueur made his senior debut during the 2006–07 Ligue 1 season.[1]

Standard

In August 2011, he was transferred to Standard Liège and signed a five-year contract with the Belgian club.[5] Near the end of a league game against Lierse in December 2013, Vainqueur received a red card when he accidentally kicked an opponent in the face.[6]

Dynamo

On 27 June 2014, Dynamo Moscow announced signing Vainqueur on a long-term deal.[7]

Roma

On 31 August 2015, he moved to A.S. Roma.[8]

Marseille (loan)

On 31 August 2016, Vainqueur joined French club Marseille on a season-long loan deal.[9][10]

Personal life

Vainqueur is of Haitian descent.[11][12]
