Xenoblade Chronicles 3[a] is an upcoming open world action-role playing video game developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It will be the fourth entry in Monolith Soft's Xenoblade Chronicles series, and the eighth main entry in the Xeno series overall. Announced on February 9, 2022, during a Nintendo Direct presentation, the game will feature a narrative centered on a new cast of characters, depicting the respective futures of the worlds featured in Xenoblade Chronicles (2010) and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (2017).

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is scheduled for a worldwide release in September 2022.[1]

Development

In May 2018, series creator Tetsuya Takahashi pitched a new game concept to Nintendo. The first production group, known for their work on the ‘’Xenoblade Chronicles’’ series, started development on a new project in August 2018 after Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country went gold.[2] In October 2018, the 1st production division of Monolith Soft, led by Tetsuya Takahashi, started hiring for a new role-playing game project in the style of previous Xenoblade Chronicles titles.[3] As of 2020, the Production Group is currently focused on strengthening the Xenoblade Chronicles brand for the foreseeable future, leaving no room for a smaller-scale game outside of the series.[4] Takahashi said that while a continuation to Xenoblade Chronicles X is possible, the next game may go in a different direction as he often gets bored with the last project.[5] In addition to pursuing a new direction for the series, series director Koh Kojima expressed an interest in making Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles X2.[6]

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was officially announced on February 9, 2022, during a Nintendo Direct presentation, being scheduled for release in September 2022. The game is described as featuring a narrative that will depict the respective futures for the worlds of the previous two entries.[7] Following the announcement, a blog post on the official Nintendo website revealed preliminary details about the game's development. Xeno series creator Tetsuya Takahashi was confirmed to be working on the game in an executive director position, while various other returning staff members from previous Xenoblade Chronicles games were revealed to be reprising their duties, including the composing team behind the first two entries and Masagatsu Saito, returning to work on the game's art alongside Koichi Mugitani.[8]
