Bellerby & Co Limited[edit]

Bellerby and Co Limited, commonly referred to as Bellerby Globemakers, is a London based globe maker specialised in crafting of terrestrial and celestial globes.[1] Founded in 2008, they currently offer a collection of hand made globes which retail tin the United Kingdom and on request into international markets. While offering a variety of models and designs, the company are also known for their commission based work.

Bellerby & Co products are distinct for their use of their "roller bearing base", which is noted for its modernising contribution toward globe creation. The company's products have been noted for its merging of "traditional globemaking techniques with modern technology, each globe is a piece of art in it's own right, offering an inspirational and education experience that will last generations."[2]

History[edit]

Founded in 2008, Bellerby and Co. Limited completed their first globe in 2009 at their prior premises in Kynaston Road, London. The company have since moved to a larger premises in Bouverie Mews, Stoke Newington, London.[3]

In an interview with Monocle Magazine, founder Peter Bellerby stated that he founded the company after failing to find a gift of sufficient quality for his octogenarian father's birthday. Having commissioned the suitable work with a budget of £10,000, the project faced considerable delay and difficulty, leading to the final product being delivered eighteen months late and at a cost of more than £150,000. It was this experience, according to Bellerby, that demonstrated the potential demand for such a product and the need for a return of high quality modern craftsmanship in the field.[4]

Following the company's creation, Bellerby modelled many initial incarnations on the solid brass meridian based globe's associated with traditional globe design. Subsequently, the company has innovated their design methodologies and are now able to incorporate more novel techniques, most notably the "roller bearing base" now used in many Bellerby designs.

A principle inspiration for this innovation centred on the refinement of a design initially devised in WW2 for the war time leaders Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt.[5] Principally an emblematic gesture, both wartime leaders were presented by the US Military with 50-inch, 750 pound globes to assist them in following wartime developments. A copy of the original given to President Roosevelt can now be found in the Speaker's lobby of the House Chamber in the U.S. Capitol Building.

While figuratively significant, these designs were largely ineffective in practical use, which led to quick deterioration in the globe itself. Incorporating contemporary technology, Bellerby & Co now assert that it's Churchill model is a fully functioning version of this initial design.

Notable Works[edit]

In 2011, Bellerby & Co provided artist Yinka Shonibare with a series of designs for an installation at the Manchester Whitworth gallery.[4] Shonibare has subsequently used Bellerby globes for further installations at the Royal Opera House and in the 2013 exhibition at the Stephen Friedman gallery.[6]

Later in 2011, a number of Bellerby globes were featured in Martin Scorcese's film Hugo.[4]
