I recently wrote an article Jonathan Fielding it was removed and there is no history of it in my Contributions any more. The materials I used were provided by Dr. Fielding and were his standard bio and resume... of course, some of this is published elsewhere on the web as he is a member of many prestigious organizations which give pieces of his bio when they list him on their web site. I tried to explain that in the Discussion section when someone removed the Overview as copyright violation. However, now the Article is completley gone as is any history of it. Thanks Dr. Strassburg

Hi. I think the issue is that you need to be able to prove that the copyright holder authorises the content to be included on Wikipedia. At Wikipedia:Copyright_problems it says the following:

Copyright owners who submitted their own work to Wikipedia: If you submitted work to Wikipedia which you had previously published (especially online), and your submission was marked as a potential infringement of copyright, stating that you are the copyright holder of the work on the article's talk page helps, but will not likely prevent deletion. It is sufficient to either:

Make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL at the site of the original publication; or
Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en at wikimedia dot org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation.

License tagging for Image:JFielding001.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:JFielding001.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Copyright[edit]

Hi, I can't restore the article, since the history contains copyright violations. If it all is derived from his standard bio (written by him or his staff) that means the copyright belongs to them as well. If you have permission to release the material under the GFDL you can follow the steps above. However, you can recreate the article and start from scratch, the article does not have to be undeleted for that. Also, regarding Image:JFielding001.jpg, the picture looks like it came from the same set as the picture on this website. Since it's not likely you take the picture, the copyright still falls under Fielding or his staff. Which means it can't be licensed under a Public Domain tag. Yes, Dr. Fielding has provided me with the materials including the latest photo. Obviously, he uses this in many places. I am happy to work on a new article, however, I did write a number of sections specifically for Wikipedia and would like to be able to obtain a copy of that. I guess I did not keep a copy, as I never thought something so basic as information from a standard bio written by the owner (Dr. Fielding) would have so many copyright issues. Yes, I wrote this using standard bio materials for Dr. de Quadros, who is also world famous and bio appears in many places. He has reviewed this entry and agrees with what I wrote. Again, in our business (Public Health Professionals) many of us are on a variety of different committees and organizations which need to publish parts of our bios, thus the material appears in a variety of places. Usually such text is written by the person themselves and given out for common use (that is the case for both Drs Fielding and Quadros). I understand your concerns, however in these sort of cases where the author indicates that such materials are from individuals themselves (related to standard bios and resumes) I would think that this should be allowable under normal copyright usage. There was not much in the article which was not copied & pasted. I put it below here. The fact that they release their bio for press releases and such does not mean they release it under public domain or the GFDL. Everything one writes is automatically copyrighted, for Wikipedia that person has to explicit give permission to license it under the GFDL or public domain. This might seem too strict, but we have to be careful regarding copyright. Also, people give press releases but they don't automatically want their text to be modified, and that is one of the core principles of Wikipedia, that other people can modify the text you submit. Garion96: I believe your personal interpretation of what should be allowed regarding bios and from resumes appears to be very restrictive indeed. Are you saying one should not cut and paste from a list of publications of the author?? If one followed your guidelines here I would imagine that many notable persons included responsibly in Wikipedea would be removed. What I am saying is that; 1. I am using materials directly provided by Dr. Fielding with regards to his Bio and Resume 2. I have his full permission to use these materials and he approves of the article. 3. That these materials were developed by Dr. Fielding himself. Not sure what more you could possible want in this sort of article.

A similar situation exists for the other article I authored for Ciro de Quadros. Despite the common elements elsewhere I have spent considerable time organizing and editing these entries so that it is appropriate for Wikipeadia.

Which means he has the copyright on those materials.
Please follow the steps in the section above to confirm to us that there is permission.

I am happy to include the correct copyright tag although I am not quite sure which one to use. I am acting for the contributor, this case Dr. Fielding, who is the author of all these materials, as is Dr. de Quadros.

Similar situation[edit]

I have noticed, through your posting on Jimbo's page, that we are in relatively similar situations. I do think the Wikipedia enterprise is valuable and developing but the time and energy necessary to make serious contributions seems sometimes just out of proportion. By trying to use my real name, Jeffrey Newman, I have been barred because when I originally registered I did not give my e-mail address. Now, trying to deal with that, is becoming more and more absurd. Are you persevering? I am not sufficiently accomplished in the computer and technical skills to work all this through and only do iut in the middle of the night because I have moreimportant things to do during the day.
