List of New York State Historic Markers in Cortland County, New York[edit]

The intro text and category for this article have been edited to match the title and the actual location of the markers. If you are creating (or have created) similar articles, would you please check that the information in the article is consistent with its title. Thanks. Hey, the article appears to me to be a copyright violation, as do all the other county articles split off from a List of New York State Historic Markers state-wide list. Inoysterbay, what are you thinking? It is not okay to cut and paste from websites generally. I do personally like to see coverage of historic sites and even just historic markers, and i am mildly flattered that you saw ift to copy my format developed in National Register of Historic Places listings in New York, but I don't see what wikipedia coverage can add to what is apparently already on-line (provided by New York State). And, it is copyright violation to copy the text. I have been supporting your efforts to develop coverage of the Oyster Bay stuff, where copyright issues were addressed, but here I think there is no remedy. I am kind of disappointed, actually. It is a lot of work now to put all those separate pages up for deletion and perhaps to have to fight a battle about it with you. Stop developing those now, please, and discuss. I currently think the right thing for me to do now is to open a group AfD to delete all the separate county lists you have started and get them deleted as copyright violations and/or not notable, and to revert your edits to the main state-wide list article. But, what were you thinking, and what do you want me to do? You put me in a bad position. doncram (talk) 17:15, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for replying (at my Talk page). There are indeed some general issues, and I have by now noticed that the previous NYS page already had some historic plaque texts included. The other wikipedia examples you provide are interesting, too, and perhaps all those will need to be revisited, too. Could you copy, modifying if necessary, your response to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Historic sites#Historic plaques, where i just tried to open a general discussion? It should be a topic of wide interest, for the Historic sites wikiproject. I suggest having a broad discussion there for those interested in historic sites. But the copyvio discussion for Cortland county etc. is now started at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2009 May 17 and should continue there, with aid of copyright experts. doncram (talk) 18:50, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What's going on[edit]

Thanks for your note to my Talk page. I appreciate your substantial response there and otherwise to my concerns. About your offer to refrain from editing for awhile, I appreciate your intent to provide some distance and appreciate that means you would not do more NYS county articles on the historic plaques (which I asked for), but I am even concerned that it could prove counter-productive if you mean to withdraw completely. My indication of "burnout" seems to have drawn Beeswaxcandle in to do copy-editing on the History Walk list-article, and then there are related issues coming up, about referencing the audio tour properly and about keeping or deleting the various subarticles. I would in fact appreciate if you would stay involved. Further, I appreciate that you did take on the NYS historic plaques topic, which I think can/will lead to some good, despite some disagreements and necessary sorting out of opinions vs. wikipedia policies and so on. Gotta run now, perhaps could respond more later. Regards, doncram (talk) 18:52, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of Oyster Bay history questions[edit]

Hi, I've got a couple of questions arising from the History Walk article.

  1. What are the details of the third cannon at the Bandstand?
  2. Can you give me any information about the old fort on Fort Hill? The article mentions Simcoe ordering the rebuilding of "an old fort". What is known about that old fort? Also, is there any information on what happened to the rebuilt fort?

Thanks for any help you can give. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 09:14, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Permission, historical markers?[edit]

Hi. :) Any luck with the New York historical markers permission letter? I can't find any sign of a letter about it in the permission queue. Do you know if they intend to send one? --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:57, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback. One problem we face is that our copyright policy puts the burden on us to verify that the material is not copyrighted. Verifying that it is not copyrighted is obviously difficult in some cases. (Much simpler if it were published in, say, 1905!) I'll leave this one for a few more days, while we see what may come of the permission request, but meanwhile, I'll check with an administrator I know from Wikisource, who has been very helpful in the past in working out what's what in the gray areas. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:14, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Thanks for letting me know. I was just noting at the copyright problems board that this one needed more time. :) And I have asked for feedback from User:Jayvdb, who is an administrator at Wikisource. This will be helpful no matter what happens with New York, since the question has broader implications. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 17:41, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Since permission hasn't come through and this has been listed well over seven days, the article has been deleted. If permission does come through, it can be restored. Please let me know if you want me to e-mail you a copy of the text that was, so you can create a new version that does not have these open-ended issues. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:49, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I am just getting around to this now. I have an email from the NYS State Historian and Chief Curator of the New York State Museum, that states "We have no control over the use of individual historical marker texts, and I would see no reason why you couldn't present them in a format of your own." I am happy to share this message with you electronically, though equally happy if you take my word for it and restore the page. Thanks for your conscientious efforts to stick to the rules. In this case, however, I think we are ok keeping the text up as is. Thanks. Inoysterbay (talk) 00:06, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oyster Bay Townsends?[edit]

Hi Inoysterbay, I see that along with a lot of historical articles from your area you contribute to a lot of Townsend articles. John and Henry were my 10th great grandfathers through Solomon Townsend, the ship's captain. Let me know if you would like to compare notes on the family. pmcyclist (talk) 15:51, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also descended from John Underhill. If you're interested I have a genealogy online at geni.com and I can grant you access so that you can see, edit, and add to it there. Send me an email at pmcyclist@yahoo.com so I can add you to the tree. I just published an article on Frederick Townsend who was a Civil War officer on the union side and was Adjutant General of the State of New York, as was his brother Franklin Townsend after him! Interestingly, their sister Mary married a Confederate General William H.T. Walker. Interesting times at the Townsend dinner table in Albany at that time, I'm sure!
I've been writing wikipedia articles on the descendents of Isaiah and Hannah Townsend, which along with Frederick and Franklin include a (Union) Civil War Naval Captain Robert Townsend (Captain). These guys grandfather was Solomon Townsend, a revolutionary war era ship's captain whose portrait was given me by my uncle and appears in the article (and which triggered my interest in documenting some of these fellows for posterity.
Solomon's cousin (and father in law) was Peter Townsend (no wikipedia article yet!) who'se company Stirling Iron Works forged the Hudson River Chain that kept the British Royal Navy from sailing up the Hudson and controling that critical asset which almost certainly would have altered the outcome of the Revolution. I haven't yet found enough information on Peter to establish an article on him.
Do you have a plan of approach on how you're documenting this family?
Underhill was an interesting guy. My 10th great grandfather, his history has become decidedly un-PC these days. I'm not thrilled with the article on him, and think it could be a lot better, but I haven't had time to work on it.
So send me an email if you wish and I'll add you to the tree so we can collaborate there as well as here. Best to you! pmcyclist (talk) 00:54, 14 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image of Oyster Bay Flag[edit]

You do a lot of articles on the history of Oyster Bay, New York. Would you happen to have an image of the Oyster Bay Town and/or Village flag? I've been considering introducing it to the Flags of the World website. ----DanTD (talk) 06:45, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I was going through the orphaned pages, and found your article. I noticed that you also created Oyster Bay History Walk that has a section called Captain Kidd in Oyster Bay. I was wondering if a redirect from Captain Kidd in Oyster Bay to Oyster Bay History Walk would be alright. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 01:46, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Historic Markers in Ulster County, NY[edit]

Hi Inoysterbay, I just wanted to let you know that the great burden you began in 2009 on the page on historic markers in Ulster County, NY has been taken up and I've added a lot to the page. Thanks for getting me started! Great to work together on something. --HighAtop94 1-September-2017

Notice

The article Oyster Bay Main Street Association has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I can't find any significant coverage that would justify inclusion. Aside from passing mentions in local newspapers and one in the New York Times, there seems to be little coverage of this organisation.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — Blablubbs (talkcontribs) 19:01, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
