Mendoza is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, in the U.S. state of Texas.[1]
Geography
Mendoza is located at 30°00′18″N 97°41′10″W / 30.00500°N 97.68611°W (30.005, -97.686). It is situated along U.S. Route 183 and Texas State Highway 130 in north-central Caldwell County, approximately 24.5 miles south of Austin, 10 miles north of Lockhart, 77.4 miles northeast of San Antonio, 157.9 miles west of Houston, 208 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, and 344.9 miles north of the Mexico-United States border.
History
A post office was established at Mendoza in 1892, and remained in operation until 1911.[2] Sources differ whether the community was named for Antonio de Mendoza,[3] or a local settler.[4] The 1936 county highway map showed a church, a cemetery, an industrial site, several businesses, and numerous residences at the townsite. Only one business was reported in the community in 1987.
Education
In 1905, Mendoza had one school building with one teacher and 47 students. It was also shown in the 1936 county highway map. The building is not in operation. Today the community is served by the Lockhart Independent School District.
Historic populations
In the first quarter of the 20th century, Mendoza had a population of 200 residents. The population fell to 100 during the Great Depression, and remained at that number until the mid-1960's, when it dropped to 50. It still had fifty residents in 1990. It's population grew to 100 in 2000, and is the most recent population recorded in the community.
Businesses
Businesses currently in operation in Mendoza include: Briarpatch Ranch, La Rancheria restaurant, Harmony Path Veterinary Clinic, Ozarka Bottled Water Delivery: Austin, TK RV & Auto, MoneyGram and Homann Farms. All of these are the current businesses shown on a map of Mendoza.
