Michael P. Peterson is a geographer, cartographer, and professor of geography whose research is highly influential to Geographic information systems and computer cartography, particularly as they relate to the Internet and World Wide Web.[1][2][3] They have been a professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha since 1982, and worked as a visiting professor at least seventeen other universities in at least eight countries, including Austria, Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, and New Zealand.[1] Among Peterson's other academic activities and service, he was the president of the North American Cartographic Information Society between 1996 and 1997 and editor of the journal Cartographic Perspectives from 1998 to 2001.[1][4][5]

Education and field

Peterson has both his masters and Ph.D. in geography, with a B.A. in Earth Science.[1][2] His Masters thesis is titled "An Evaluation of Cross-Line No-Class Computer Choropleth Mapping" and his dissertation "Map, Image and Mind: A Pattern Quality Test of Graduated Point Symbol Maps."[1] Throughout his career, he has been heavily involved in researching the implementation of GIS and computer cartography, especially related to the internet. He has been highly influential in research on GIS education.[3]

Career

Academic

After obtaining his Ph.D., Peterson's first academic position was a post-doctoral assistant at the University of Zurich between 1981 and 1982.[6] He then got a position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1982, where he became a full Professor in 1997.[1][2] He has held his position as a professor at the University of Nebraska since.[4]

In addition to his time as a full professor at the University of Nebraska, he has held numerous visiting and adjunct positions at other institutions worldwide. These visiting professor positions included Lanzhou Jiaotong University (2017), Wuhan University (2015), University of Canterbury (2012), TU Wien (2011, 1999), Sultan Idris Education University (2009), Gadjah Mada University (2009), University of Indonesia (2009), Carleton University (2004), Munich University of Applied Sciences (1999, 2000, 2001), RMIT University (1998), University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (1995), Free University of Berlin (1990 to 1991), and University of Washington (1984 to 1985).[1][4] He has hosted various workshops, courses, and conference sessions across the world as well.[3]

Research

Peterson's research has focused on developing and understanding cartographic and GIS practices, ethics, and applications.[1][7] Topics that Peterson has investigated include animated mapping, computer cartography, and distributed GIS.[8][9][10] This research has been extremely influential in guiding the course of GIS development for the past several decades.[3]

Professional service

Peterson has served various roles in organizations throughout his career. Most notably, he was vice president of the North American Cartographic Information Society from 1995 to 1996 and president of the organization from 1996 to 1997.[1][5] They have also held leadership positions in the Cartography and Geographic Information Science, and the International Cartographic Association.[1]

Publications

During their career, Peterson published several peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries. These include entries for choropleth mapping, isoline, and Web GIS in the Encyclopedia of Geographic Information Science.[11][12][13]

They have authored, or served as an volume editor, for numerous books including:
