The Faroe Islands 1. deild, the second division of football in the Faroe Islands, was founded in 1942. It is organised by the Faroe Islands Football Association. The league has been known as 1. deild since 2005, because the top division was renamed Formuladeildin for sponsorship reasons.

It currently has 10 participating clubs. At the end of each season, two teams are relegated and two promoted from what is now the Second Division, pending the fact that the winning team in any given division doesn't already have a senior team in the division it is being promoted to. In such cases the team that finished second will be promoted in its stead. If a team is relegated to a division where one of its teams are already playing, the second best team will move one division down, thereby saving another team from relegation.

History

Although the league was founded in 1942, clubs did not compete in European competition until 1993. From 1942 to 1975 it was called Meðaldeildin (The Middle Division) and from 1976 to 2004 it was called 2. deild (Second Division). The third tier has since adopted this name.

At the end of the 2007 season, B36 (10'th placed finishers) and KÍ (9'th placed finishers), were in line to be relegated, but due to the fact that one of the teams who won promotion to the 1. Division already had one team in the 1. Division, they could not be promoted, thereby saving KÍ Klaksvík from relegation.
