Maria Anna was born 8 June 1804 at the Hofburg Imperial Palace in Hofburg, Vienna. As a daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor, she was born with the title Archduchess of Austria (Ihre Königliche Hoheit Erzherzogin von Österreich) and the style Imperial and Royal Highness.
She is said to have been mentally deficient (like her eldest brother, Emperor Ferdinand I) and to have suffered from a hideous facial deformity.[1] She spent almost her entire life confined to one apartment in the Hofburg Imperial Palace in Vienna.
Generations are numbered by male-line descent from Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor. Later generations are included although Austrian titles of nobility were abolished and outlawed in 1919.
