Baba Raghav Das Medical College(Hindi:बाबा राघव दास मेडिकल कॉलेज) or B.R.D. Medical College is a state Medical College in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is affiliated to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University.

History

The foundation stone of B.R.D. Medical College, Gorakhpur was laid on 8th November, 1969 by late Shri C.B. Gupta, the then chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. The institution was named after “Baba Raghav Das”, who was a devoted freedom fighter, prominent Sarvoday Leader of this area and close associate of Mahatma Gandhi and Acharya Vinoba Bhave. The appearance of a medical college in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, so called ‘Purvanchal’, improved the availability of tertiary health care in this relatively backward area.

The first batch of 50 students was admitted in August, 1972. MBBS teaching was started from 8th August, 1972 under the dynamic leadership of Professor P.L. Shukla as the Founder Principal and Professor of Anatomy at Government Polytechnic College for next 1½ years, as the building construction was in progress.

The teaching hospital complex named “Nehru Chikitsalaya” (Nehru Hospital) came into existence in August, 1974. Now, it has got over 800 indoor beds and outpatient department for various medical disciplines.

Courses

The annual intake capacity of the Medical College for MBBS is 100 and 54 PG seats in various departments. The process to increase MBBS seats to 100 is already going on. With upgradation of Medical College, the PG capacity of Medical College would be increased to 105 as per the new MCI guidelines.

Nehru Hospital

Nehru Hospital is affiliated with the college. Nehru Hospital is a G+3 level 700 bedded hospital, with an additional 108 beds in the epidemic ward. It accommodates various departments of clinical subjects, X-ray facilities, central registration of patients (indoor and outdoor), emergency services, intensive care unit, epidemic ward, blood bank, drug distribution center, ART and VCTC Centre for treatment and diagnosis of HIV positive patients, DOTS and microscopy center for diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis patients, and 1 Lecture Theatre (seating capacity=450). The hospital also manages a diagnostic center as public – private partnership for advanced investigations like computerized tomography scan (CT Scan) and Doppler ultrasound.

Upgrading under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana

Six medical college hospitals in Uttar Pradesh will be modernised and converted into super- speciality facility on the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). It is one of the medical colleges that will be upgraded under Phase 3 of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

Earlier, the Institute of Medical Sciences at Varanasi, the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute at Lucknow and the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College at Aligarh have been upgraded under PMSSY.

Under PMSSY-3, the central and state governments contribute on an 80:20 basis for establishing tertiary health care facilities by upgrading the existing ones.[1]
