Monopoly is an upcoming film based on the game of the same name.

Development[edit]

Early attempts[edit]

In November 2008, Ridley Scott was announced to direct Universal Pictures' film version of the game, based on a script written by Pamela Pettler. The film was being co-produced by Hasbro's Brian Goldner as part of a deal with Hasbro to develop movies based on the company's line of toys and games.[1][2] The story was being developed by author Frank Beddor.[3] However, Universal eventually halted development in February 2012 then opted out of the agreement and the rights reverted to Hasbro.[4][5]

In October 2012, Hasbro announced a new partnership with production company Emmett/Furla Films, and said they would develop a live-action version of Monopoly, along with Action Man and Hungry Hungry Hippos.[6] Emmett/Furla/Oasis dropped out of the production of this satire version that was to be directed by Ridley Scott.[7]

In July 2015, Hasbro announced that Lionsgate will distribute a Monopoly film with Andrew Niccol writing the film as a family-friendly action adventure film[7] co-financed and produced by Lionsgate and Hasbro's Allspark Pictures.[8]

In January 2019, it was announced that Allspark Pictures would now be producing an untitled Monopoly film in conjunction with Kevin Hart's company HartBeat Productions and The Story Company. Hart was attached to star in the film and Tim Story was attached to direct. No logline or writer for this iteration of the long-gestating project had been announced.[9]

Resurgence[edit]

In April 2024 at CinemaCon, it was announced that Lionsgate and Hasbro Entertainment would partner with Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley's company LuckyChap Entertainment to produce the Monopoly film adaptation.[10]
