Countries using this rank include Argentina and Spain (Spanish: capitán de fragata), France (French: capitaine de frégate), Belgium (Dutch: fregatkapitein), Italy (Italian: capitano di fregata), Brasil and Portugal (Portuguese: capitão de fragata) Croatia (Croatian: kapetan fregate ) and Germany (German: Fregattenkapitän) .
The Russian/Soviet equivalent is "captain of the 2nd rank" (капитан 2-го ранга)

Fregattenkapitän is an OF4 rank equivalent to the Oberstleutnant (en: Lieutenant colonel) in Heer and Luftwaffe. The U.S. Navy's rank of Lieutenant commander is equal to Korvettenkapitän in NATO's military hierarchy (classed as OF-4).
