"I Want to Protect You" is a download single available at the Eels download store and on the iTunes Store. The song was released on the Eels website on March 3, 2006, and later included on the two-disc compilation Useless Trinkets: B-Sides, Soundtracks, Rarities and Unreleased 1996–2006.

While promoting the album Hombre Lobo, E explained that the lead single "Fresh Blood" is a sequel to "I Want to Protect You." "I wrote a song a few years ago called 'I Want to Protect You' that was about wanting to protect someone from the wolves. Now I am the wolf."[1]
