Joshua ("Josh") Malik Childress (born June 20, 1983) is an American professional basketball player with the Phoenix Suns of the NBA. He previously played with the pro club Olympiacos Piraeus in the Greek A1 League[1] and the Euroleague, as well as the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA.

High school career
Childress attended Mayfair High School in Lakewood, California. Besides playing basketball in high school and being named a McDonald's High School All-American, he also played volleyball during his senior year. He led his high school volleyball team, the Monsoons, to an undefeated record and he was voted to the All-League volleyball team.
College career
Childress then played three seasons of college basketball with Stanford, where he was named an AP First Team All American, an All-American Consensus Second Team member, the Pac 10 Conference Player of the Year, and the Pac-10 Conference Tournament MVP as a junior in 2004. He then declared for the 2004 NBA Draft and was a first-round pick, number six overall, the highest a Stanford player has ever been drafted.
Pro career
NBA
During the 2004-05 NBA season, Childress emerged as one of two promising rookie talents for the Atlanta Hawks, along with Josh Smith; as the season went on, the two showed improved play, minutes, and production. Childress ranked third among rookies in double-doubles in the 2004-05 season, behind only Emeka Okafor and Dwight Howard. He was also voted to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.
Europe
On July 23, 2008, Josh Childress accepted and signed an unprecedented 3 year $20 million net income contract with the Euroleague club Olympiacos Piraeus.[1][2] The contract was equal to and worth the same as a 3 year $32.5 million NBA contract,[3] not including that Childress would also have his local taxes and agent fees paid for by Olympiacos as well. In addition, the contract also provided Childress with a house and a car.
Childress would be making then in total, a salary in Olympiacos that was equal to about $15 million per season in the NBA. The contract also included opt-out options after each of the first two seasons. Childress also received a Greek Nike shoe contract after signing with Olympiacos Piraeus, a Nike sponsorship club.
He had been offered a 5 year $33 million gross income deal by the Atlanta Hawks,[4] but he turned it down because it was significantly less money than Olympiacos offered him. Childress averaged 8.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.1 steals per game during the Euroleague 2008-09 season.[5]
Return to NBA
In 2010, Childress was acquired from the Atlanta Hawks by the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a future second-round draft pick.[6]
During the 2011 NBA lockout, Childress said he would not consider playing overseas. He cited concerns with reliability of getting paid, differences in coaching styles, and lower standards of business travel compared to the NBA.[7][8]
United States national basketball team
Childress also played with the junior national teams of the United States. With the USA's junior national team, he won a silver medal with the 2000 Youth Development Festival West Team. He also played at the 2003 Pan American Games.
