Madda Walabu University, one of the public universities in Ethiopia, was established in 2006.[3] The university is located in Bale Zone, in the town of Robe, about 430 km (270 mi) from the capital city, Addis Ababa. The university has 46 undergraduate and 28 postgraduate programs.[2]

History

[edit]

The name "Madda Walabu" is a historical place, which is 227 km (141 mi) from the zonal town Bale Robe to the south west.[4] Historically the place is closely related to the Oromo people. It is the cradle of Oromo civilization and the birthplace of the Gadaa system.[5][4] It also produced numerous Oromo heroes.[5] Because of its deep rooted value for Oromo people, the name Madda Walabu is commonly used by Madda Walabu Stadium, Madda Walabu Cultural band, Madda Walabu University itself and other smaller business centers named after this unique place.[4][6]
