Initially it was announced that Samantha Ruth Prabhu will do this movie.[3] Hansika Motwani was approached to play the lead female role but could not sign the film due to unavailability of dates.[4] Later Karthika Nair was signed to essay the character of the love interest of Vishal Krishna, who was said to be playing a triple role for the first time in his career.[5] Karthika opted out of the project citing that the script had undergone major changes and revealed that Vishal would only play a single role, as well as there being an addition of an extra lead actress. Anjali replaced her in the film, and soon after the makers announced that Taapsee Pannu was approached to play one of the two lead female roles.[6][7][8][9] Varalaxmi has been brought in replacement of Taapsee,[10] as the latter had some date issues.

Sadha shot for an item number in the film, while Prakash Raj and Nithin Sathya were signed on in supporting roles.[11] Taapsee has opted out of the film and was replaced by Varalakshmi Sarathkumar.[12][13] Sonu Sood plays a leading industrialist who wants to step into politics to taste power.[14] Arya has done a cameo in this film.[15]

The film was scheduled for released on 6 September 2013, along with its Telugu-dubbed version NTR (Nataraja Thaney Raja).[16] In August 2013, the film's tagline "MGR" was removed, in order to avoid controversies following Thalaiva's problems, with the movie' expected release date moved to March 7, 2014.[17] The film has not yet been released as of October 2014.
