The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV or DMV) is the governmental agency responsible for registering and inspecting automobiles and other motor vehicles and for NYS Enhanced Driver License/Driver's license and Enhanced Non-Driver Photo ID Card/Non-Driver Photo ID Card in the U.S. state of New York.
The Division of Field Investigations (DFI) is the criminal investigations arm of the DMV. Its investigators/law enforcement officers combat auto theft, identity theft, and fraudulent document related crimes in New York. These investigators are armed New York State peace officers with statewide authority to enforce laws and handle investigations.
