"Rum Pum Pum Pum"
Song

"Rum Pum Pum Pum" (Korean첫 사랑니; RRCheot Sarangni; lit. "First Wisdom Teeth") is a song by South Korean girl group f(x). It was released as the lead single from the album Pink Tape on July 29, 2013, through SM Entertainment.

Background

The lyrics of the song begin:

안녕 한 번 쯤은 / 날 들어봤겠지 / 너의 사랑니 (아아아)
Annyeong han beon jjeumeun / nal deureobwat getji / neoui sarangni (aaa)
Hello at least once / you probably heard of me / your love tooth, aaah

Rum Pum Pum Pum is a song of dance-pop with exotic hand drums, whiplash-y snares, funky sixties guitar riffs, and synthesized squirt. Lyrically, it expresses first love on a wisdom teeth. f(x) compare themselves to the pesky molars in another one of their typically bizarre metaphors, with lyrics like, “Attention boys! I’m a bit different / I pushed aside all the others and took my place,” and, “I will pierce through your heart’s wall and grow.”[1] The idea is that the wisdom tooth (in Korean "love tooth") pushes aside all the other teeth and takes its place deep in the boy's heart.

The song’s “Rum Pum Pum Pum” title is used to imitate the sound of a beating heart, which is brought to life with a brilliant “Little Drummer Boy” sample that later segues into samba. It is interspersed throughout the song "peoreom peoreom peom" (퍼럼퍼럼펌) and "reom peom peom peom" (럼펌펌펌). The pain of the first love is like the pain of the first wisdom tooth. The busy production also features exotic hand drums, whiplash-y snares, funky sixties guitar riffs, synthesized squirts, and alien vocal layering.[1]

Music video

The music shows f(x) dancing to cheoreography by Jillian Meyers, featuring her third work with f(x) since Pinocchio (Danger) and Electric Shock. It features three sets: one white sparkling set, another pink room with glossy pink borders, and red ceiling-to-floor room with lights on the sides. The members are shown wearing four different outfits and showing different hairstyles, some which were never seen: Victoria is seen without her bangs, Amber going back to her yellow hair, from Pinocchio (Danger), Luna has her hair long on a blue shade, Sulli with her brown short hair (which marks since she cut her long hair for her drama) and Krystal dyed her hair to red. Throughout the video, the camera focuses on cheoreography, and closes up in each girl in walking on the white set room, with floating flowers.

Release

On July 17, S.M. Entertainment announced that f(x) would return to the Korean music market with their second full-length studio album Pink Tape on July 28, 2013 after a year of absence.[2] On the same day, the agency also uploaded a teaser picture of Krystal onto f(x)'s official website.[3] On July 18, S.M. uploaded teaser pictures of Victoria and Amber.[4] Four days later on July 22, S.M. Entertainment uploaded the music video teaser to the album's title track, "첫 사랑니 (Rum Pum Pum Pum)", onto their official YouTube channel.[5]

With less than half the week to rack up sales and downloads to chart on the K-Pop Hot 100, the song still was able to debut in the top 20, landing at number fourteen for the week of August 10, 2013.[6] A week later, the song topped the chart, marking the group's first number one single on the Korean Billboard charts.[7]
