U.S. Senate Race of 1804[edit]

The article states "In 1804, he was defeated in a bid for the United States Senate by Samuel Ashe."

North Carolina chose a Class II Senator in 1804. Montfort Stokes was elected but declined to serve. The legislature then elected James Turner in late 1805 to the seat. Benjamin Smith may have been the Federalist nominee in one of these races, or not. We need a source for the information posted here. My information comes from North Carolina Government, printed in 1979. I posted the information at http://www.ourcampaigns.com/ContainerHistory.html?ContainerID=156 . A new boook about Bemjamin Smith is coming out soon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/078646156X/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER) and I recently stumbled upon an old book entitled "The Masonic Governors of North Carolina" written in 1937 by Earley W. Bridges while in the rescricted stacks at the Charlotte Library. With these two sources I plan on doing a large edit to this article.EricCable (talk) 14:55, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category:American slave owners[edit]

No mention of slave-owning whatever in the article. I feel that this category should be restricted to people whose slave-owning history was notable in itself. Valetude (talk) 12:14, 13 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
