Untitled[edit]

I've done a seach in both Spanish and English on general search engines and specific academic databases. I wasn't able to yield any real results for these supposed "Chinatowns":

Chile[edit]

I'm dubious of the existence of this chinatown. I've been living in Santiago for ten years, and, while there is, in fact, a sizable population of chinese descendants and inmigrants there isn't a chinatown per se. Punga (talk) 01:21, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Netherlands Antilles[edit]

Netherlands Antilles's Chinatown can be found in the capital, Willemstad. Its Chinese immigrants came from neighboring Latin American countries, particularly Venezuela and Panama. Many of ethnic Chinese also went to The Netherlands. Like Chinese of other Latin American countries, they also speak Spanish as their additional language.

Nicaragua[edit]

Managua has a small Chinese community. Bluefields reportedly has the largest Chinese Latino community in all Central America. The first Chinese settlers originated from the mainland, but there has recently been an influx of Taiwanese settlers; some Japanese have also started to settle the formerly all-Chinese area. However, many Chinese- and Japanese-Nicaraguans left the country in the 1980s to escape the Sandinista regime; most re-settled in the United States.

Paraguay[edit]

Paraguay's Barrios Chinos are located in Asunción and Ciudad del Este. Many Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea settled these Barrios. Ethnic Chinese from neighboring countries have also re-settled here.

Why where Chinese expelled from Mexico in the 1930s?[edit]

Quote from the article: "The first Chinese immigrants to Mexico came from China, some were Philippine-born Chinese, brought by the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade. However most contemporary Chinese immigrants came to Mexico during the 20th century as contract workers and Political refugees. With the rise of anti-Chinese sentiment in Mexico in the 1930s under President Plutarco Elías Calles, most Chinese Mexicans, including individuals of mixed Chinese and Mexican descent, were forced out of Mexico and deported to China."

Is there any further information about that event? Why where the Chinese forced out of Mexico, what did the anti-chinese sentiments in Mexico come from?

Well, I thought it was pretty obvious? Mexicans probably discriminated on them. It was quite awhile back, when textbooks and novels were just starting to come into print, so I doubt anyone can remember. Unlike the other Overseas Chinese groups, though (Hoa, Chinese Thai, and even Chinese people in Japan), it was a different country, and I think at least for the others, despite hate from the "real" ones of PRC and HK and TW, at least they were Asian countries. Mexico was not Asian. They probably couldn't get along. But still, I heard they have Chinese in six digits in Mexico today. ★Dasani★ 03:42, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Panama[edit]

Hello Community, on this section a whole chunk of information was edited out. This is for your consideration on re-adding it or what to do with it. (I left a note explaining my view on the talk forum of the next editor [Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:LaNicoya] after my last post)

Panama-China Politically : Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui presented a Chinese arch as a gift to the Barrio Chino of Panama City following his visit to Panama. Panama and the Republic of China share official diplomatic relations. The People's Republic of China (mainland China) has attempted to influence Panama politically with little success so far, although it does hold economical ties. In effect, President of Taiwan Chen Shui-bian donated US $50,000 to the local Chinese cultural center in 2001. The government of Taiwan also funded the opening of the Sun Yat Sen School in Chinatown, offering lessons of Mandarin Chinese as well as promoting Chinese culture among the resident Chinese population.

Interesting Facts:

  • Baseball pitcher Bruce Chen of the Baltimore Orioles is a native of Panama and of Chinese decent.
  • There are about 200,000 overseas Chinese living in Panama, the largest of such population of any Latin American country.
  • Newer arrivals tend to be working-class immigrants from Taiwan, due to Panama's relation with Taiwan. Although, this is highly debatable

The information was not deleted, it was hidden. The section on Panama has enough info to start a page of itself (Chinese Panamanian or Chinese immigration to Panama). Doing that, we can rid of the political' info and transfer it to its own article. As for the Interesting facts section, it resembles a trivia section, which wikipedia is not. Also, Bruce Chen is on the list of other Asian Latin Americans, this is not a place to list "famous" Asian Latin Americans. As for the other info on the "interesting facts" section, it could well be incorporated into the article itself, no need to single it out. Suriname is NOT a Latin American country[edit]
