A fact from David Johnson (quarterback) appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 16 January 2009, and was viewed approximately 313 times (disclaimer) (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:
Johnson is not expected to be drafted, and if he doesn't make a team as a free agent, he's not going to meet WP:ATHLETE, much less WP:BIO. I'll wait until August to propose an AFD, but it's a shame to see so much effort on an article like this when there are so many other holes in the encyclopedia. Regardless of whether or not Johnson meets WP:ATH (which is open to interpretation), he meets WP:N, as he has had two feature articles written about him in different newspapers that are cited in the article alone (there may be more). WP:N trumps WP:Athlete... An individual cannot be "not notable" due to WP:ATH, because it is additional criteria. That is, it is inclusive, not exclusive. Why do you believe he does not meet WP:N? The Press-Register and The Birmingham News both ran feature stories about him which are cited in this article. According to WP:N: this is significant coverage (both articles are solely about Johnson), reliable (the newspapers of record of two cities), secondary sources, multiple sources, that are independent of the subject.
Additionally, on a cursory search, I also see that he was a Sporting News conference offensive MVP, Davey O'Brien Award finalist, Draddy Award semi-finalist, and the New York Times had him on its Heisman Trophy watchlist. The Albuquerque Journal ran a feature on him [1], The Oregonian ran a feature on him [2], The Tulsa World ran at least one feature on him [3]... That is far above and beyond what WP:N calls for as "significant coverage", and in the newspapers of record in five large U.S. cities no less (Birmingham, Mobile, Tulsa, Portland, and Albuquerque). A lot of that stuff is wikipuffery, but I'll remove the tag, since it's enough to likely make an AFD nomination futile. "All-Conference-USA honorable mention" = "NFL practice squad" at best: teammate Paul Smith, a better QB, hasn't even made an NFL team. THF (talk) 23:19, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Who cares about the NFL? You keep bringing it up, but it is tangential to notability here. I did not cite C-USA honorable mention at all here, although it is included in the article for accuracy and completeness. Being named the offensive MVP in C-USA is of some note, but obviously doesn't itself grant notability. Finalists for the awards include a lot of people, but it is another piece of evidence that helps lend credence to notability. However, having six newspapers of record (Portland, Memphis, Tulsa, Mobile, Birmingham, and Albuquerque) write feature articles on the subject (whose combined daily circulation equals that of the NYT) is concrete proof of notability. And these are not local papers only or trivial coverage, but full-length features solely focusing on Johnson himself. If that doesn't satisfy WP:N, then what would?
