Disambiguation[edit]

Note to administrators: the AfD of May 11, 2008 concluded that there should be a disambiguation page here. If you find an speedy-deletable article about a band instead, please check the page history. Darkspots (talk) 00:00, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Things Change. That AfD process seems right, in that equal disambiguation has stood the test of time. Still, Dr. Acula (band) did indeed get an article, years before it became a former band.
I comment on that, not so much to note that both sides in a controversy can easily be wrong in the long term (as here), as to raise the possibility that (even tho i agree that there is no WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for the title "Dr. Acula"), Dr. Acula (name) or Dr. Acula (meme) is a possible article, quite distinct from the Dab: chronologizing its occurrences from (i'm guessing here, more careful compilation of date ranges needed) Ed Wood (early '50s), thru Forrest Ackerman (late '50s, IIRC), Bear vs. Shark (2001?), Mitch Hedberg (no later than 2003), Dr. Acula (band) (2003), to Scrubs (2005). We don't who inspired whom, or stole from whom, but without our speculating we still could provide grist for those who want to speculate in non-encyclopedic fora, by giving a chronology of first known uses in each of those 6 contexts.
Altho the Dab and a meme-ish article would in a sense "cover virtually the same ground", neither precludes the other bcz they would cover it in different ways, reflecting the difference between any Dab and any article. The Dab provides only enuf info to effectively distinguish between senses, and thereby efficiently get readers to the Dab's respective target articles, while the article would interested in the variety and the similarities among the senses, and directly support research on how the similarities and dissimilarities have played out, including details that, if they had been included in the Dab, would interfere with its functioning.

Band from Long Island[edit]

I've done what searches I can for Dr. Acula from Islip, Long Island. The band fails our notability guidelines, to the best of my knowledge. Typically, we don't have listings on disambiguation pages for subjects not notable enough for their own articles. If there are reliable sources that have reviews of this band, or something else that indicates notability, please let us know about it. Among other things that make me doubt the notability of the band, the Uprising Records website doesn't have any mention of Dr. Acula that I could find, although the claim has been repeatedly made that Uprising has signed the band. http://www.myspace.com/uprisingrecords there myspace is full of information regarding Dr. Aculas signing.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.131.90.237 (talk) 23:45, 23 June 2008‎

Hasn't this discussion occured several times in the past? I remember being involved in one, but I guess they all got erased. Hmmm...Evaunit♥666♥ 00:18, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The blue box encloses two 'graphs from the same edit, which were separated by the shouting IP (whose contrib is now at the end of the section), and which i have now pulled back together for clarity at least of attribution.
--Jerzyt 03:22, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please read Wikipedia:Reliable sources. At its core this policy states that Wikipedia articles should use reliable, third-party, published sources. These two sources are a myspace page, of unknown authorship, and the Apparatus review, which is a fan forum. Both of these are very far away from published sources. I would very honestly be happy to help write Dr. Acula (band), but I've looked for sources and they're not there on the web. That I can tell.
To Evaunit: yes, this page has been repeatedly deleted. Darkspots (talk) 02:33, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That seems kind of counterproductive to delete the reasoning for why an article was deleted. It'd make the current discussion easier. Evaunit♥666♥ 00:35, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
http://uprisingrecords.com links straight to their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/uprisingrecords) which shows that Dr. Acula is signed by them. Can this page be created now? 70.121.49.108 (talk) 18:09, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
8 talk revisions to this talk page, from 8 February to 10 April 2007, were deleted, 15 February 2008, pursuant to a WP:CSD#G8, clearly as a result of WP:CSD#A7 deln of the accompanying article the same day.
CSD#G8 does provide for {{G8-exempt}}-tagging of talk "useful to Wikipedia", and this instance seems to me to have required investigation of whether Eva-u's note justified talk-undeletion, which i shall belatedly make (but not today).

Dark is not alone in the error of posting two paragraphs, each of which is complete without the other, over a single sig. But have never seen a worse outcome: the shouting IP below (perhaps reasoning that they were responding to only the first 'graph) inserted their supposedly "****"-delimited msg right after the first 'graph, leaving the appearance that Dark had responded to Eva-u, while the invocation of WP:RS above it was an unsigned contrib; it never even occurred to me that that might have in fact been what happened, until i laboriously plowed thru the relevant edit-history.
The Académie Wikiaise has not sat to specify a thoro manual of style for talk pages, and i think i would rather see a WikiProject advice page on the matter, to lessen the probability of users being deterred from talk contributions by any impression that form is more important that substance. However, view this talk section's markup by starting (and probably not saving) an edit of the sec'n, and look at this contrib. The thing most worth noticing is that in this otherwise simple 3-'graph-and-sig structure, it's easy to find the break between the markup for one graph and the next, if i need to add a 'graph or to break one into two. And similarly, in the event that i find the need, e.g.,
-- to put a list of numbered points inside one graph, or
-- to quote, with indentation, text from
  1. the article,
  2. the WP namespace,
  3. another talk page, or
  4. elsewhere on the same talk page,
there are clean ways to do that -- but no inviting place for the dreaded response that is embedded in the middle of the message it is responding to. (The commented-out newlines are there to reduce the attention needed if more complex indentation turns out to be make sense, but editors reckless enuf to put their response there are posed with an exercise beginning with a "Wha.. did my comment land in a sinkhole?" exercise.)
(Maybe this includes the core of a future essay.)

Mitch Hedberg joke[edit]

   I removed

*Mitch Hedberg, a comedian, performed a joke referring to a Dr. Acula (I went to see the doctor. All he did was suck blood from my neck. Don't go see Doctor Acula)

bcz a Dab titled "Dr. Acula" can have entries only for articles which would provide information wanted by people who would look up "Dr. Acula" or "Doctor Acula" in an encyclopedia. I thot for a moment that

He told the joke,
I went to see the doctor. All he did was suck blood from my neck. Don't go see Doctor Acula.

might fit into the discussion of his style, but it doesn't seem capable of illustrating what's now said there (even if it can be sourced). If, when his bio has been appropriately expanded, you can drum up a genuine consensus on talk:Mitch Hedberg (you probably ought to wait until it includes some editors with previous, retention-worthy edits) that mention of his fictional char belongs in the bio, i'd support an entry on Dr. Acula under "Fictional characters", along the lines of

* Doctor Acula, in joke by Mitch Hedberg.

--Jerzyt 02:41, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The joke appears on his Mitch All Together album; supposedly the chronology is right for it to have inspired the use by Scrubs of the term, starting with the "My Missed Perception" ep (#6 of season 5, aired Jan '06, after his March '05 death -- perhaps a time interval that made them see it as timely as a tribute? Perhaps verifiable, in which case IMO it could add to notability of the joke).
