Two weird things - fix?[edit]

First, this phrase "The Spit features the longest road into ocean waters in the entire world," is in sources but is clearly wrong. It's stated at the cited source (archived here), and also said at this site. But there are longer "roads into ocean waters" than this evidently 7.2-km one. What about the 8.3-km Atlantic Ocean Road, in Norway? What about at the opposite corner of the United States, the 181.9-km Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys?

Second, the section on "potential threats" seems (to me, at least) odd for a Wikipedia page, saying that the subject could be wiped out by a hypothetical tsunami or a volcano. The Homer Spit is fragile, sure, but that a tsunami or volcano could wipe it out is true about most things, no? And why not add a meteor, or an alien invasion to the list? As another example demonstrating my first point, this is newer than the cited source but there's also the new 16.3-km Pingtan Strait Road-Rail Bridge, in China. Also the 55-km Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge. Sullidav (talk) 23:07, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I shortened the "potential threats" section along lines of my comment #2, deleting material that's outside the realm of an encyclopedic description of the place. Sullidav (talk)

I agree that is demonstrably incorrect, it's actually felt wrong to me for some time but I never really investigated it.

On the other hand, I don't agree that there is anything wrong or even unusual about mentioning the potential threats. We live every day here with these dangers, they are very real and not hypothetical, you can see several nearby volcanoes quite well on a clear day on the Spit, and I've personally had to evacuate my home due to potential tsunamis on multiple occasions. Not even close to the same thing as the extremely remote chance of an asteroid hitting Homer. I think the current version is inferior to how it was worded. I'm quite certain as well that a little digging would reveal that the tsunami warning system kinda sucks. Beeblebrox (talk) 04:17, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
