there has been some (private) discussion of what the nation's overall placement should be from year to year so here is a summary of how it is established. From 2001 until 2011 Division I and Division II had two tournaments that were equal to each other, so each nation had to be compared with the equally placed team in the other tournament to get their overall placement. In 2012 it was restructured placing Group A ahead of Group B, which is simpler for ranking, but the overall historical picture looks confusing or perhaps wrong. The top tier has 16 nations Division I and II have 12 each.
So:
2001: 16+12+4=32 (4 because they were the second best second placed team)
2002: 16+12+6=34 (second best 3rd placed team)
2003: 16+12+9=37 (best 5th placed team)
2004: 16+12+10=38 (second best 5th placed team)
2005: 16+12+2=30 (second best 1st placed team)
2006: 16+12=28 (second best 6th placed team in Division I)
2007: 16+12+6=34 (second best 3rd placed team)
2008: 16+12+8=36 (second best 4th placed team)
2009: 16+12+10=38 (second best 5th placed team)
2010: 16+12+11=39 (best 6th placed team)
2011: 16+12+12+1=41 (1st place Division III)
2012: 16+12+6+5=39 (5th place Group B)

@18abruce: reverted my change saying my numbers are wrong, however I do not believe his are correct. His source [1] shows 1994 as they played 5 games. However if you look at the full results [2] they played 6. - GalatzTalk 16:50, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, they played five games you have it wrong. You are duplicating one of the games or you don't understand how the tournament works, I am not sure which. Sometimes results carry forward so it can be confusing.18abruce (talk) 18:18, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
