Requested move[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was not moved. Evidence people, evidence. Completely empty to say "Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME" when the nomination (though it says other things that are not germane) appeals directly to commonnames and supplies a Google search in support of the move. The fact is, however, that we default to searches that concentrate reliable sources, which should be done before any web search ever enters the picture (and in fact a web search for me does not show the disparity at all the the nomination states). Since no one supplied one, here, a News Archive search (A vs. B) and Book search (C vs. D) show Junior to indeed be significantly more common.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:02, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Junior" is just a nickname. His player profile on the BRFC and Premier League websites identify him as David, not Junior. Rafael Benitez and Rafael Nadal are both nicknamed "Rafa", Josep Guardiola nicknamed "Pep" and Fredrik Ljungberg nicknamed "Freddie", but their articles still have their real names. Also, you get 934,000 Google results for "David" and 561,000 for "Junior". Unreal7 (talk) 12:06, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Weak support Present evidence supports the move—Sky Sports has "David" as well—but this could change. Most of the examples cited are imperfect, as they all involve nicknames which are abbreviations of the athlete's full name; see Chipper Jones and Magic Johnson for better examples. It would be WP:CRYSTAL to call WP:COMMONNAME on "Junior" at this point, but Hoilett does looks likely to increase in stature, so I temper my support and ask that this discussion not prejudice future ones if the "Junior" usage becomes more widespread. --BDD (talk) 15:39, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - better known as Junior, I've never heard commentators call him David and in fact didn't even realise that was his real name.... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 15:40, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. Adam4267 (talk) 15:41, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. David is his official name but he is more widely known by the name Junior. TonyStarks (talk) 20:47, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Per WP:COMMONNAME. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:30, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
