false[edit]

"by the end of World War II, the U.S. Navy had also commissioned 112 six-gun destroyers derived from the Fletcher design; 67 Allen M. Sumner class 2200 tonners and 45 Gearing class 2250 tonners." data for Gearings it's false only a few were commisioned by the end of war and none gone in combat in WWII

Troublesome second sentence.[edit]

Hello. When first reading the article I found this sentence..."In 1898, while the Spanish–American War was being fought in the Caribbean and the Pacific, Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt wrote that torpedo boats were the only threat to the American navy, and pushed for the acquisition of torpedo boat destroyers."...from the opening paragraph somewhat troublesome. Here's why: TR resigned as Asst. Navy Sec. on 25 April 1898, the same day Congress reciprocated Spains declaration of war. Anything he wrote about torpedo boats during the war would have been as Lt. Col. Roosevelt U.S. Army Volunteers, not still as A.S.o.N. or perhaps he wrote about them and lobbied Congrees for torpedo boat destroyers in the weeks prior to the declaration of war. Either way the statement seems to be incorrect as written. Some sourcing for it would be nice. Sector001 (talk) 15:32, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
