How is this a history?[edit]

Why is a hotel fire in the US split away from all the other fires in the world? What makes a "hotel fire" special? The first sentence just references a list of hotel fires, it's just a directory of hotel fires with more than 10 fatalities. That doesn't make them of "historical note". A lot of these fires will be notable, but this isn't a history - it's just a list with a somewhat arbitrary inclusion criterion. 188.222.170.156 (talk) 22:16, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What makes "List of Oasis band members" or a list special? Because they're from Manchester? What makes Liam sing like he's got a peg on his nose and a bottle of Jack Daniels shoved up his arse? Its a history of hotel fires killing 10 or more people in the United States which are mostly all notable fires, exactly what it says on the tin and yes many of them are undoubtedly fires of major historical significance in the relative city histories.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:45, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I came across this while looking for something else. The Nordale Hotel in Fairbanks, Alaska played a major role in the town's history. Of perhaps even greater historical significance than the hotel itself was its 1972 fire. This fire included a notable victim, Eva McGown. It appears that in adopting an arbitrary external criteria as good enough for Wikipedia, we're leaving out fires which were also milestone events in those communities, instead scoring them based upon the number of deaths.
I don't have handy access to quality sources right now, so this is strictly from memory. The Lane Hotel (which may have actually been called the Hotel Lane) was one of the first hotels in Anchorage, which means that the building was approximately 50 years old at the time of the fire. Don't know if that really means anything, as the Nordale was much older when it burned. Anyway, I believe one of the victims was Albert Kaloa, perhaps the key figure in starting what became the Alaska Federation of Natives. Ironically, this fire occurred weeks before the group met for the first time.RadioKAOS (talk) 06:16, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No so sure about MGM picture's inclusion[edit]

I noticed the MGM photo is of the second and totally unrelated hotel structure and not that of Bally's (whose towers look the same as back when it was the MGM). This gives a mistaken impression to a casual reader. I would suggest an exterior shot of the Bally's towers. --Bobak (talk) 04:51, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
