Parentheses[edit]

can anybody tell me what the heck the numbers in parentheses next to the team names are supposed to mean? it's not number of victories, number of appearances, or number of losses; at least, not as far as i can tell. -- Bcordes 22:18, Jun 24, 2004 (UTC)

Trivia section[edit]

I am disputing the team records listed in the trivia section. D.C. United had a record of 16-16 in 1996 and Colorado had a record of 14-18 when they went to the MLS Cup. MLS did not have ties in those years and the leagues official records list wins and shootout wins as equal. In addition, there were never pk wins in MLS. I will change this page in a few days. Concacaf Champions' Cup[edit]

Are we sure about the Cup runner-up getting the second berth if a single team has taken both the Cup and the Shield? I've heard it goes the other way - the runner-up for the Shield gets the second berth. That's what the Shield article says, anyhow. US Open Cup Info on MLS Cup Page[edit]

Hi All, the US Open Cup info of the MLS Cup Finalists has just been removed by user "12.166.53.130", I actually thought that there's no harm keeping the info, since it just provided another perpective on what were the other Major Domestic Honours these teams have also achieved.

The case in point was the 2003 season, where Chicago Fire almost won the Treble of USOC, Shield & MLS Cup, but fell at the last hurdle to SJ.

In 2005, LA Galaxy became the most successful team that season by winning the domestic double, despite having a dismal regular season.

I'll proceed to restore the article to the older version.

I have to disagree. Maybe that information can be sent to a MLS Double page or what not, but the extra information about the clubs' placing in the Supproters Schield and the US Open Cup makes the page incredibly unreadable. People are going to come here for a history of the MLS Cup Game, not a retrospective on the different seasons of various MLS teams. -good(Quakes fan! GO Orange Quakes!) Nov. 11.

I've edited the page to leave in only the information about the MLS Cup. Playoffs, Open Cup, Supporter's Shield information can all go elseware. Worst MLS Ccup winners[edit]

I agree. Winning percentage makes little sense in comparing soccer records. For one thing, a record of 11-10-9 does not have a winning percentage of .524 (11 wins divided by 21 decisions), which for whatever reason ignores the 9 ties. Ties would ordinarily be counted as half wins and half ties, so 11-10-9 is a winning percentage of (15.5 divided by 30 games played) .517. But this is all moot because with wins being worth 3 points, ties cant't be counted as half wins anyway. When it comes to comparing soccer records, winning percentage has little value if used as it would be for baseball or NFL football. However, if you go to the MLS stat page on their website, they do have a section for winning percentage. The league standings are stilled based on points (3 for a W, 1 for a T), but a separate section lists winning percentage (W + .5T/W+L+T). KitHutch (talk) 18:32, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

if Toronto FC wins the MLS cup, will the scudetto still be an American flag? just asking because of the obvious fact that Toronto is in Canada and the team is predominantly Canadians.

Playoffs "Apperances"[edit]

The "Apperances" column in the "MLS Cup Successes" Table seemed to be a bit pointless as it simply added-up the winners & runners-up count of each team for apperances in the MLS Cup final. Maybe we can replace it with (or add a new column for) "Playoffs Apperances", which gives a better view on how each team has utilized its chances in the playoffs to reach the final? Half Time Shows[edit]

Are the half time shows really important enough to note? Even thought the NFL has such a section, I don't think the MLS needs a similar section. The groups who play at NFL halftime shows are much more noteworthy than Jimmy Eat World and Chester French. Halftime shows in the NFL are noteworthy but surely the MLS's are not (yet at least). Leaving years like 1997 and 1998 blank because the halftime show is unknown both shows that the shows are noteworthy and is sort of silly to leave blank (instead of just deleting the line). Since Americans are relatively new/growing to soccer, perhaps the halftime show entertainment would be of interest. I watched most of the 2011 Major League Soccer cup final with Los Angeles Galaxy beating Houston, but don't remember any halftime entertainment. MLS Cup being awarded to "winner of MLS playoffs"[edit]

I appreciate that MLS awards two trophies - the MLS Cup and the Supporters' Shield - and that they're for different things; but the common understanding, reported in reliable sources, is that the winner of the MLS Cup is the League Champion. E.g., here, here. MLS itself characterizes the winners of the conference playoffs as Conference Champions, see here; so why wouldn't the team that prevails in the final matchup between Conference Champions be the League Champion? I think if the article is going to describe the MLS Cup, narrowly (and idiosyncratically) as the trophy given to the winner of the MLS Playoff matches, it needs to be sourced properly. Yes. We are supposed to be doing summary style even if we link to longer descriptions on other articles. I'm not saying redo the section but simply blanking while only leaving hatnotes would lower this article on the quality scale.Cptnono (talk) 06:43, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The table now shows for 2015 Columbus in the Winner column and Portland in the Runners Up column. That is obviously premature (and I personally think unlikely). MLS Cup MVP award[edit]

I don't know when it started, but I believe that the Most Valuable Player in the MLS Cup final is no longer called the "MVP", but rather, the "Man of the Match" (presumably an allude to the USOC, FA Cup or any other major soccer tournament). GA Standard[edit]

Right now, I believe the MLS Cup article needs much more additional information to make it a legitimate article, and a worthy good article.

My plan is to structure the article with the same elements used with the Super Bowl's structuring, along with the FA Cup. This way, it can have a blend of an American sports championship article, while having the basic elements of a soccer championship article. Below is my idea to improve it from a C-class article to B-class article

trophies[edit]

the article contains contradicting information in regards to when the trophies were change and the names used. Was the second trophy design used from 98-07? was it first called the Alan I. Rothenberg Trophy than changed in 00 to the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy? was the first trophy design 96-97 called the doug logan or alan I. Rothenberg Trophy

according to this [1] the name Philip F. Anschutz Trophy first used in 08. and the first 2 trophies were name for Alan I. Rothenberg Trophy

Importance of Entertainment section[edit]

Would anyone mind if this section were entirely deleted? What artists played in what halftime show and what songs they played holds very little importance to the subject of the article. Location of Trophy Image[edit]

So, I'm here trying to find a consensus for the location of the image of the current trophy. I'm in favor of putting it in the infobox, in keeping with Stanley Cup, a Featured Article, (as well as every single hockey trophy page), and Grey Cup. Those are the two clearest parallels I can come up with, as the page for the trophy and the page for the event that gives out the trophy are the same thing (like MLS Cup). Other clear parallels are Soccer Bowl (if you want to argue that MLS Cup and the Anschutz Trophy are different things). Essentially, whenever an event is named after its trophy, and that event doesn't have an evergreen logo, the standard practice seems to be to use the trophy itself. You know, if there's a de facto protocol on how to handle cases like this, then I'm okay with the trophy image in the infobox. I looked to see if there was an MLS Cup logo that wasn't year specific, or even a vector logo of the cup, but there doesn't seem to be one. So thanks for bringing up the other examples. Teams from Cascadia[edit]

The three teams in the Pacific Northwest all play for the Cascadia Cup and their cities identify with the Cascadia regional culture. It's not just an independence movement, hence why it's not the primary topic. SounderBruce 21:25, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
