  • What is "R1" (mentioned twice in the article)? Gatoclass (talk) 08:51, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gatoclass: "R" is the abbreviation for South African rand. "R1" means one South African rand, while "R1 million" means one million South African rand. LefcentrerightDiscuss 14:56, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks, but is "R" the usual way of denoting the currency? I mean, if you're not aware of that, it's a little mystifying. Any chance you could wikilink it or something? Gatoclass (talk) 02:14, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gatoclass: My mistake for not being clear. "ZAR" is the actually abbreviation for the currency, while "R" is the symbol. To use "R" is the correct way of denoting the currency. I have wikilined the two "R"s. Should I perhaps write the amounts out in full in the article? LefcentrerightDiscuss 03:14, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Lefcentreright. There is just one other concern I have, and that is concerning notability. I am admittedly not up to speed with current standards as applied to WP:POLITICIAN, and I'm just not sure that the mayor of a local municipality of 100,000 people meets that standard? Gatoclass (talk) 08:43, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your concern, @Gatoclass:. I actually put off writing the article for the longest time, because I was not sure that she would meet the WP:POLITICIAN standards. Van Staden does, however, meet WP:GNG. LefcentrerightDiscuss 08:57, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gatoclass: I am flying to Johannesburg on Wednesday, 13 July. Can we possibly wrap this up by then, because I'm not taking my Lenovo with me? WP:POLITICIAN says that just being a local official or an unelected candidate for public office does not guarantee notability, however, such people can still be notable if they meet the general notability guideline. I am confident that Van Staden meets WP:GNG because she has received significant coverage from large news websites and she is the mayor of a large local municipality for South African standards (most municipalities don't have more than ~50,000 residents). • New enough and long enough. QPQ present. The article itself looks good: the hook fact checks out and is interesting (I prefer ALT0 as snappier than ALT1), and Earwig only notices the included quotes. No concerns here; though I do acknowledge the notability matter, my sense is she passes GNG. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 04:08, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
