Comment[edit]

This is an interesting article, but it would be much more useful if dates were added to the top section. I'm not sure when this all occurred, and why it's all in the past tense if the tunnels are still being used. Moncrief 17:02, Jan 24, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. Aren't the tunnels still being used? Or are they under a different authority now? I'm still unsure why the past tense is being used ("PTaTR was....")if the tunnels are still in operation. If it's no longer in operation, who owns the tunnels now? Moncrief 21:26, Jan 24, 2005 (UTC)

The company was merged into the PRR at some point, which later went into Penn Central and Conrail, and then the line was sold to Amtrak. I just added most of that to the article. --SPUI 21:42, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Sunnyside Yard[edit]

I have not edited the article, but this is slightly misleading. There are actually two double track tunnels east of Penn Station to Sunnyside Yard. Only the north tunnel was (and is) primarily for Long Island Railroad service. The south tunnel was for through PRR trains to New England via Hell Gate Bridge (don't know when that service began) and, more heavily, taking empty trains just arrived at Penn station from the south and west to Sunnyside Yard for breakup and turning and also taking just made up empties to Penn Station. This pattern continues with Amtrak. Sunnyside at most times (perhaps at all times -- I am not sure about the current situation) has been used primarily by PRR and more recently Amtrak for breakdown, makeup, turning, cleaning, servicing and storage of long distance trains and equipment -- not LIRR. I think the usual contributors can verify the above. If I don't see an edit over the next month or so, I may try my hand at it. Electric operation[edit]

According to Joe Brennan, there was no law mandating electric power through the tunnels at the time they were constructed, only from 1926–1930. Electrification appears to have been simply a matter of practicality. Choess 17:18, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
