Added alternate meaning[edit]

Included the information that "out of the box" is a synonym for "out of the closet" and linked to the article on Coming out --142.157.195.81 (talk) 05:06, 9 April 2011 (UTC)'.[reply]

Move discussion in progress[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Maroon (color) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RM bot 23:45, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reversed move?[edit]

@Anthony Appleyard: I really appreciated your moving Out of the box (disambiguation) to Out of the box per my request. But less than a day later, you've reversed that move entirely, and I can find no discussion anywhere about it. Also, you've added an entirely different phrase ("outside the box") to this page, when that needs to have its own dab. What is going on? — Gorthian (talk) 06:59, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Station1: I just found your message at Anthony Appleyard's talk page saying that you contested this move. I wish you had posted that here. — Gorthian (talk) 07:10, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have now restored this page to cover only this particular phrase; I also restored the dab at Outside the Box. Station1, I do want to have a discussion with you about whether or not to move this page. — Gorthian (talk) 07:31, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for fixing the dab pages. Please see next section below for what happened. Station1 (talk) 18:13, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Out of the box (disambiguation)Out of the box@Gorthian and Station1: A new dispute about this move has arisen. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 08:49, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Where is the dispute? I know Station1 didn't want the move, and I wanted to ask some questions about that to find out more. Are you requesting the move, Anthony Appleyard, or are you asking on behalf of someone else at WP:RM? — Gorthian (talk) 09:02, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Gorthian and Station1: An argument seemed to be developing in my user talk page, so I better get it discussed in what seemed to be the right place. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 09:04, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Anthony Appleyard: I did read that. You might have missed my additions to the section just above this one.
Sorry, I need to retire for the night. I'll be back in the morning. — Gorthian (talk) 09:13, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I agree there is certainly no "dispute" here. I simply moved Gorthian's good faith technical request at WP:RM to the "Contested Requests" section because in my opinion the target title's history of deletion and merge requests and redirect reversions made a move controversial and worthy of discussion here. The problem arose only when the move was made anyway, after the request was contested, and the complex edit history and talk page for "Out of the box" wound up at "Thinking out of the box", a new redirect to a different topic, where it would have been difficult to find. I'll address the merits of this move request below. Station1 (talk) 18:05, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Recordings[edit]

"Out of the box" has been used in the past to identify a recording at a radio station which is played immediately without listener input, usually from an established artist. Billboard has regularly used the term; numerous references may be found in its archives, via Google or this site. Mapsax (talk) 22:13, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
