Birthplace[edit]

Was he.not born in Wallasey, Cheshire? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.29.164.130 (talk) 21:07, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just to note that primary sources show his birth was registered in the Wallasey registration district in the first quarter of 1966 refer https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl MilborneOne (talk) 18:07, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Details of (1) grandfather and (2) parents.[edit]

  • 1: I've relocated the information about his grandfather, also a baker, from the Personal Life section to the first part of the Biography section, where it's more relevant.
  • 2: "Paul’s parents' marriage took place in Wallasey, Cheshire in 1965.[2]". This could not be about his personal life, because it happened before he was born. I'm sure that details of his parents are important to Hollywood himself or a family genealogist, but the details of their marriage - before he was born - are not particularly notable in a WP biography of him. If the information cleared up a well-asked question, or was in itself notable, it would be a different matter. In this case, there's no indication that it fulfills either of those things, so I am removing it.
If you feel it must be included, the only appropriate place for it would be the general biography section, along with the details about other more notable members of his ancestry. In such a case perhaps somebody could add information about the 2*great- and 3*great-grandparents mentioned in the article; are they maternal or paternal? His name Hollywood[edit]

Has anyone made sure he is really called Hollywood? Just asking. I don't think he would be a celeb if he was called Wythenshawe. I hope that last remark doesn't make someone say I am turning this into a forum, coz that's the last thing I want to do. Wythy (talk) 15:44, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You think Who Do You Think You Are? might have made that bit up, yes? Martinevans123 (talk) 16:47, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Nope I don't. He wouldn't have had such 'success' if he was called Paul Wythenshawe, though. In my view. Wythy (talk) 20:59, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You think that having the name Hollywood has, in some way, accentuated his skill as a baker? Or perhaps that it contributed to his TV breaks in such BBC shows as The Generation Game? Well maybe, but I think you'd struggle to find a WP:RS that supports, or even suggests, that possibility. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:12, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hollywood is an ancient Anglo-Saxon surname. It has nothing to do with the LA location. Paul Hollywood became a celebrity because he was on The Great British Bakeoff, which was an expected hit. He absolutely would have been just as famous if his surname was Wythenshawe. Sadiemonster (talk) 15:40, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
His birth details are on a reputable genealogy site here. Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:08, 16 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Style"[edit]

Is "baking" a syle? The infobox template says this: "style: Insert the person's style of cooking if known. Such as Asian, Southern, Mexican, East Indian, etc. If unknown leave blank." i.e. it seems to equate style with geographic region. c/f Jamie Oliver. Is Hollywood best described as "a clebrity chef" or as "a celebrity baker"? Any thoughts? Martinevans123 (talk) 16:26, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Baked Alaska anecdote?[edit]

The article says 'In season 1, episode 2 of The Great British Baking Show: Masterclass, Hollywood had visible trouble staying alert while Mary Berry demonstrated how to make her Baked Alaska. Hollywood repeatedly commented "huh" and "why" during the segment.' There's no source cited, and it seems both irrelevant and not neutral. This is someone's opinion of what they think is going on in a scene. Sadiemonster (talk) 15:44, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia and not really relevant, I have removed it. MilborneOne (talk) 19:59, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Birthplace accuracy per BLP[edit]

From our article: Wallasey (/ˈwɒləsi/) is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, in Merseyside, England, on the mouth of the River Mersey, at the northeastern corner of the Wirral Peninsula. At the 2011 Census, the population was 60,284.

Hollywood's own autobiographical information in the book he authored, A Baker's Life: 100 fantastic recipes, from childhood bakes to five-star excellence says he and his family moved to Wallasey and that he grew up there but seems to indicate he was not born there but moved there. I am weighting his own words above a newspaper as a source."My Childhood was in Merseyside..." and later says,"We moved to a semi detached house in Merseyside in the Wirral when I was very young and that's were I grew up.

I'll change this per the more definitive source.(Littleolive oil (talk) 18:25, 6 November 2018 (UTC))[reply]

Ack...I'm not going to fight about this.(Littleolive oil (talk) 18:37, 6 November 2018 (UTC))[reply]

The "definitive source" - which we're not encouraged to use as it's a primary source - is this, mentioned above on this page, which states that he was born in Wallasey. That is confirmed by various press reports (and, I've just noticed, here). I don't know precisely what his autobiography claims (for instance, does he explicitly say that he and his family moved there, or simply his family? Or is it simply that he moved to a semi-detached house in Wallasey from another sort of house?) - but the evidence that Wallasey was his birthplace is overwhelming. Wallasey School of Art[edit]

Was there some connection between Wallasey School of Art and Liscard Hall, as suggested here? It seems it has its own Facebook page: [1], but not a great deal of content! Also some archive material here. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:07, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Wallasey School of Art was based in Liscard Hall, which was demolished in 2008. What was the question? Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:39, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The actual question was: did Wallasey School of Art get subsumed into a larger educational establishment at some stage? Or did it just disappear? It might still warrant a separate article, I guess (or perhaps get a mention at Liscard Hall?) Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:58, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a mention of Liscard Hall to this article, and I may get round to adding to the article on the building. I'm sure the School of Art, as an institution, was merged into something, but as of now I'm not sure what. Further research definitely needed ! Ghmyrtle (talk) 11:23, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
