Reputed age of Sir George Beeston[edit]

Sir George Beeston's reputed age is discussed in his biography in The History of Parliament (Volume 1558-1603) (he was MP for Cheshire 1589). The inquisition post mortem following his father's death and George's own succession to his estates in 1542 declares him to be only 22 years old, suggesting a likely birth year of 1520 (which still predates institution of parish registers)and an age at death of only 81 or 82 in 1602. The legend he was 102 at his death is based on his epitaph, according to George Ormerod in his History of Cheshire (first published 1819), though it was widespread and persistent enough to find itself being cited by Nikolaus Pevsner and the guidebook writers in the 20th century. I will qualify the statements with 'reputedly' and 'his memorial states' as well as incorporate footnote information cited to the HOP article. I notice that the inscription reproduced here misses out the detail of ages, with a female relative's stated as '[refer below]'. It would be helpful if someone who has access to a full copy or has actually seen it (I saw it in 1990s but did not transcribe it) could put them in if indeed they are mentioned. I note the linked pdf citation to an article (published after end of WWI) in a historical society magazine translates from Latin his stated age as '99th year' and his wife's her '86th year'.Cloptonson (talk) 07:39, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

For it's worth I've added a photo of Sir George's tomb that I took in 2006. Also the church guide says he was 89 at death, not 88, so I've changed that and added a ref. Don't know if that helps. --Peter I. Vardy (talk) 11:31, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
