Cortez W. Peters Sr. was a world-record holding speed typist who, along with his son, Cortez W. Peters Jr., opened the first black-owned business schools in the United States - the Cortez Peters business schools. Schools were established in Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Chicago, and during their tenure trained approximately 45,000 students.

Cortez W. Peters Sr. learned to type at the age of 11, when his father, a watchmaker, accepted a typewriter as bartered payment from a client.

Peters Sr. won his first international typing championship in 1925 with a 141 word per minute perfect timing on a manual typewriter. [1] As typewriter technology advanced and he continued to improve his technique, later in his life Cortez Sr. set a typing world record of 180 words per minute on a manual typewriter, without a single mistake (an average of 15 keystrokes per second). He holds numerous unbroken records, including 148 words per minute, for 60 straight minutes, without a single error, without subtracting out time required to change typing paper.

Peters developed special competition keyboarding methods and techniques that became the foundation of modern typing instruction worldwide.
