Wikipedia Ambassadors update[edit]

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

POTD notification[edit]

Hi Arsonal,

Just to let you know that the Featured Picture File:Punch Davy Jones's Locker.png is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on January 15, 2013. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2013-01-15. howcheng {chat} 21:34, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Welcome back![edit]

Saw you pop up on my watchlist. Don't know how long you'll be back, but it's good to see you active. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:28, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Here and there until April. I've sent you an e-mail about my plans after then. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 22:38, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
  • And I've replied. Very cool! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:45, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 10[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited JKT48 discography and filmography, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page HAI (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Improving the JKT48 English Page[edit]

Hello there. I've seen your contributions in improving the JKT48 page and I think I can assist in expanding and maintaining the content. Please send me a notification if you agree for me to join in.

Also, I have a question: Is it possible to add the pictures from the official web page whilst the copyright doesn't belong to myself?

That will be all. Thank you!

Abaone94 (talk) 16:15, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately Wikipedia policy prohibits us from uploading such photos unless we obtain specific permission from the copyright holder(s) to use the photos under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license, which I believe is highly unlikely because management of AKB48 and its sister groups are quite protective of their works.
The JKT48 is article currently at a point where it is concise yet comprehensive enough for an encyclopedia. You are certainly welcome to add material if there are any blatant omissions of key topics, but you will want to avoid adding information which may become trivial and have little relevance in the long run. The sub-articles Members of JKT48 and JKT48 discography and filmography will be the ones that require most work at this time.

Old newspapers[edit]

Don't know if you'll find this useful, but it may be a godsend if you want to do something about THHK: http://kranten.kb.nl/search/index/state/load  — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:42, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Oh, this looks like it could be fun. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 09:19, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
  • I've been enjoying it for the past few articles... the plot of Kedok Ketawa (not in any of my other sources) is derived from a review there. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:41, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
  • Heads up. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:13, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
    • Spiffy! Was there a caption that went along with the picture, given that the picture date is different from publication date? —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 06:19, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

        • This one? I'll append the file description. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 06:35, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
          • Yeah, that one. As the text is not free, I don't know if it's able to be included on Commons. I'd probably avoid the patriotic vitriol and just say "Seorang markonis sedang bekerja" — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:38, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
            • Right. By the way, there's a brief overview of Mochtar Lubis' Maut dan Cinta in this book if you want to create an article for it. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 06:48, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
              • Hmm... I haven't read that one yet! I've read three of his novels thus far, although Harimau! Harimau! was by far my favourite. I'll have to look into it, although I was thinking of filling in some of the redlinks at Pengkhianatan G30S/PKI. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:55, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Antara[edit]

Did a copyedit, added the logo. May be PD-simple, but I'm not a really good judge of that. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:07, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Also, the official Antara website gives Sipahoetar, not Sipanhoentar. Source. The book Jagat Wartawan Indonesia (which I can use to fill in articles on Sipahoetar and Sumanang) gives the same spelling as Antara. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:21, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
    • Thanks! I'm looking for someone to create a vector logo from this image. And yeah, I'll change to Sipahoetar since that appears to be the common spelling. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 03:49, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
      • That's an even better logo. K, I'll link it at the lab. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:50, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
        • Hah, you beat me to it. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:52, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

How to add my university and courses[edit]

Manjeshpv (talk) 16:35, 16 February 2013 (UTC) i'm a professor from india how can i add my university and course to wiki institutions list

Hello, Manjeshpv. You may set up your institution and course by following this step-by-step guide on how to request instructor rights for your Wikipedia account. As you are an independent educator, you will want to select the "Request 'instructor' right" on page 2 of the guide, which will generate a form that you can fill with details about your course. Please let me know if you have further questions. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 04:37, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

National Heroes[edit]

Up for a collaboration? I'm going to start a proper list in my user space. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:50, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Building here if you want to join in. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:19, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
    • I'll work on it later. Why not correspond the images with the individual? We might also need a column to indicate the hero designation they were given. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 13:03, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
      • Hmm... well, for the first suggestion... if you're thinking something along the lines of what we have at List of Prime Ministers of Indonesia I'd have to say no simply because it would balloon in size way to quickly. The second point is a good one, but we need to cite it; the source I'm using right now doesn't divide them like that. I did 49 tonight, so we're something like a quarter of the way there already (for the list proper). A good lede can be made too, eventually. We need to avoid images of statues though, as they are likely still protected under the copyright law. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:15, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
        • Reasonable enough on the imagery. Listing the designation will also allow us to choose at least one person from each category. We can also trim down the image size like in List of longest streams of Idaho. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 19:56, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
          • Assuming we have the images. Yeah, I've already used "upright" to shrink the images somewhat. Do you know any references with the designation? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:06, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
            • I'll look into it. It may be in the Presidential Decrees themselves. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 23:16, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
              • Alright, kewl. If we have room we can still add some photographs. Sjahrir has some free ones, and Djuanda too. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:32, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
                • Actually, it looks like the current article already explains the different designations because the award was called four different names over the years, referenced to Dian Andika Winda's Profil 143 Pahlawan Indonesia. Also, some interesting insight here on the role of Heroes in folklore among Indonesians overseas. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 23:35, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Yeah, that'll be useful for the lede. Mind you, I think we may have to split depending on how much detail we go into. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:41, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

  • I plan on buying one of those encyclopedias to help fill out the table, but I think the list of names is more or less done. I'll have to double check of course... Ki Hajar Dewantara nearly slipped past. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:54, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
    • Profil 143 Pahlawan Indonesia might be your best bet. I don't know if there's a newer one. Do you plan on listing everyone using EYD? —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 07:13, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
      • Yeah. I'm also hoping to avoid honourifics and sort by family name for Batak/Chinese (and some other?) groups, but I was planning on asking for your help on that. Anything published after November 2011 should be okay for our purposes, as Sukarno and Hatta are likely already included (that was the weirdest decision I've seen in this field...). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:19, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
        • Although we could keep the honourifics if necessary. Removing them may be more trouble than it's worth. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:22, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
          • I'm fine with leaving titles and honorifics out. I was thinking more of Cokroaminoto vs. Tjokroaminoto etc., applying the common name principle. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 07:29, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
            • My thought was to avoid confusing the heck out of our readers by having Oerip Soemohardjo one second and Sudirman the next. Reconsidering, I think we may need to keep some honourifics as the names are really foreign without them... Dhien, for example, or Umar. Something to think about, I guess. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:55, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
  • Coming along rather nicely. I think I have a picture of HB IX's certificate, but I'll have to check that later. I may have lost it when my harddisk crashed. What do you think so far? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:40, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
    • Looks pretty good. We can probably evaluate using titles on a case-by-case basis. As you mentioned, some names would be quite bare without them. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 19:28, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
      • Alright. I haven't had any luck tracking down a decent encyclopedia, and school hasn't left me with much time to fool around, so that one's on the back burner right now. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:22, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
  • Think you could copyedit the lede? I think for a featured list this is detailed enough. Link so you don't have to scroll. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:00, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
    • Did a quick run-through. Also, this puts Hamengkubuwono I's birth year at 1717, which seems to match other sources I've seen. That book might also be a good source in general. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 14:55, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
      • Thanks for the pointer. Niaga Swadaya... hmm... don't think I saw that at any of the stores I looked at. (checked another one earlier... nada) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:59, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
  • And it's live. Still haven't made my way to Kraton to photograph the certificate. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:54, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Chinese Music History[edit]

Hi, I found via the participants list of WikiProject Chinese language entertainment. I myself have worked on the article for Chinese rock a few times in the past and am dedicated to present Chinese music online to those that don't speak Chinese, i.e. 5/6 of the world.

As you can see from my user page, I am also one of the founding members of Rock in China (which currently expanded to Music-China.org). Our community is also a Mediawiki-based system solely focussed on Chinese music with one major difference: Whereas Wikipedia would like to be an encyclopedia with the aim to capture humankind's knowledge in brief, short and destinctive articles, it is our aim to present Chinese music in all its details and as much information as possible. As we like to say, we are preparing the reference page that Wikipedia is linking to. You can see the page for Cui Jian as example where this is implemented.

The main reason I am writing to you is that we have started a new project at Music-China.org called 'Chinese Music History' during which we want to document the complete history of Chinese music in all its details and cross-reference it to Wikipedia, i.e. work on both platforms according to each platforms' aims.

I would like to invite you, as member of the WikiProject Chinese language entertainment to help us build up both wikis, Wikipedia and Music-China.org. Please feel free to read more about us and the the project.

--Azchael (talk) 13:51, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

  • I will certainly take a look but cannot guarantee active participation as I've somewhat moved on from that interest in recent years. Is this project for China proper or the Chinese-speaking music communities (e.g. Taiwan, Singapore, etc.)? —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 00:00, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
    • Sorry for the late response. This project is for mainland China, Hongkong, Macau and to some extent Taiwan. --Azchael (talk) 15:43, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Sastra Tionghoa-Melayu / Sastra Peranakan[edit]

So, how should we refer to this in English? At Boenga Roos dari Tjikembang I've got Chinese-Malay literature, but Sino-Malay seems more common in French (Claudia Salmon's work, for example), and peranakan Chinese literature would be a possible title as well. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:53, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

  • The Sino- prefix usually refers to China proper, as in Sino-Malay relations (relations between China and Malay regions), so that's probably not the best choice. Ethnologue lists Baba Malay and Straits Malay as alternate names of Chinese Malay (though it is categorized as a language of Singapore). There's also a separate Peranakan Indonesian entry. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 23:35, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
  • Oh my... so it seems we don't have a standard term in English. I can't think of any specialists in the field who write in English... Watson wrote a little on the Chinese-Malay literature, but only in its relation to "Indonesian" lit. Thanks. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:41, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
  • U.S. publications seem to use Chinese Malay more often. Leo Suryadinata uses Chinese Malay as well. Alternatively, you might want to check the works of Melani Budianta (Professor of Literature, University of Indonesia) and see how she refers to this genre. Check your e-mail also, by the way.Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 23:46, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
  • I actually don't have any of her works... I'll have to see what I have of Suryadinata's, but if Chinese Malay seems dominant then that's how it'll be. Opening — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:56, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

WP Indonesia in the Signpost[edit]

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Indonesia for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. –Mabeenot (talk) 00:07, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

Would you like to OA for a Molecular Biology course project?[edit]

Hi,

I and User:Keilana are OAs for a course project in Molecular Biology, taught at John Hopkins University for the upcoming Spring, 2014 semester. We ran the same course last semester, and you can check out the course page. I will be putting together the new course pages (two, one each for two sections) for the upcoming semester in the next couple of days.

We are wondering if you would be willing to help with this. Mostly, it involves hand-holding and answering questions for students who are new to Wikipedia. However, we also hope that you would be able to help review articles as they become mature, during the review cycles in units 9, 11, and 13. Here is an example review by Keilana.

Depending on how many other OAs we get, we'd be asking for commitment of between two - four reviews for each of those three cycles, and each might take about an hour.

Would you be able to help with this? If so, could you please let us know as soon as possible? Thanks! Klortho (talk) 03:51, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Request for guidance on collaborative editing of article "Southeast Asian Haze"[edit]

Hi Richardson, this is Yi Han (CheekyDreamer). I am excited to see that you are a wikipedia ambassador with interest in Indonesian articles.

I lead a team of volunteers who are trying to stop the haze in insular Southeast Asia. One of our first projects is to turn the wikipedia article on Southeast Asian Haze into a comprehensive, neutral, verifiable source of information for laymen on the haze issue.

As you can see from the history, before we started, the article was embarrassingly bare. We've just started to contribute to the article. We've split up the article into a few sections so each person can focus on one section.

Do you have any advice on how we can go about developing this article? Or perhaps you can help check the quality of the article along the way?

My team members are all new to editing wikipedia. Thank you very much!CheekyDreamer (talk) 02:58, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
