I re-did the article well over a week ago and hoped it would be vetted as to whether the copyright issue is resolved. I deleted all direct quotation and tried reproduce the article without obvious paraphrase. Can someone tell me its present status. The volunteer who initially raised the copyright issue and removed most of the text from the Article had put in a note that he/she was doing exams and would not be around for a while. I tried to contact the person, but must have gone about it the wrong way - the whole thing is so so complicated my head is spinning. If you fixed the copyright issue and rewrote the content in your own words, you're welcome to add it to the article itself. You may want to do some copyediting, though. Some issues I noticed:
  • Wikipedia uses boldface extremely sparingly, with the article's title in the first sentence usually the only example. I'd also remove some of the italics, particularly for names of people.
  • Some of your "&" seem to be broken; it appears you have spaces in the HTML code. I think you can just use regular "&" without a need for that HTML.
  • You may want to check out WP:Referencing for beginners, particularly the section on re-using a reference. "Ibid." could become problematic if someone adds content - with a reference - between the "ibid." and the reference it refers to, for example. I found some other references rather unhelpful; for example, I couldn't tell what "Scot, Michael (ed. O’Regan)53" is. I assume it's page 53 of some book, but without the title I don't think I could find it.
  • When you want to cite multiple sources for the same statement, it's usually preferred to either add one footnote for each source, or to use a bulleted list (see WP:BUNDLING on that). I found it rather difficult to tell where in references 4 or 13 one source ends and the next one begins.

Help me![edit]

Please help me with adding references to an article. I submitted an article with only one reference and it was rejected because of lack of references. I have now gone into my Sandbox and added in several additional references. However when I press the REVIEW button the new references do not appear as numbers in the text and footnotes below. Instead the code >ref> the text of the reference and the code <ref> appear in the body of the article, while the original single reference appears correctly as a number in the text and as a footnote at the end of page. I must be doing something wrong. I have the URL in Wikipedia sandbox which will show you exactly my problem. But I dont want to give it here without somebody asking me for it. I have also copied the page from the Sandbox which I re-edited and for which I pressed the REVIEW button. I can also send this to anyone who might help. You will see exactly the re-edited version. I'm badly stuck

Hello EamonX1! You don't quite have the reference formatting right. The format is <ref>Text of citation</ref>. The first reference is correct, but for the others you have <ref>Text of citation<ref> (note the missing closing /). Inserting a / in the closing tag of each reference should fix the issue. (edit conflict):It looks like you didn't close the ref tag properly, to close the ref tags you need to have the slash in the last one like </ref>. I have gone ahead and fixed the ref issue in your article. However there may still be some issues. Help me, please![edit]

Please help me with...This is about the copyright issue raised about my article: ALBERT EDWIN JONES: I thought I had referenced all material used in the article (from published sources). Nonetheless the issue of breaching copyright has been raised and I must deal with it. I have contacted the Dictionary of Irish Architecture and obtained permission from the editors to quote the material. I sent an email to the permissions address given in Wikipedia instructions informing them of this and copying the letter of permission. I also sent a message to the person who reviewed the article, raised the copyright issue and removed material from the page. I have received NO acknowledgement or reply to any of this. I want some help to get my page back up and running. I have the permissions required. I emailed a copy to Wilipedia. I contacted the person who raised the issue to tell him / her what I have done. If I have to fine-tune the article adding quote marks where they might inadvertently have been omitted, I have no problem with doing this. Hello EamonX1, copyright is a rather tricky issue. To be usable on Wikipedia, the content must have been released under a free license that allows everybody to re-use and modify it for any purpose, including commercial purposes. If only you have received permission to use it, that won't suffice. Even if only Wikipedia receives permission to use it, Wikipedia will still consider the content non-free and will not use it (even though it technically could) because Wikipedia aims to be freely re-usable, and having copyrighted non-free content would compromise that goal.
Darylgolden, the editor who added the copyright tag, replied to your messages here, explaining Wikipedia's default choice of free license, and again here. Talk pages on Wikipedia should have the oldest messages at the top; thus Darylgolden moved your messages down to a new section near the bottom of the page before replying; I assume that's why the replies got lost.
The people dealing with the permission emails are volunteers too; while I do not have access to that email queue, I hear there's a backlog. Please be patient. Even if the article should be deleted because the copyright issue isn't resolved in time, that wouldn't be a problem; the page can be undeleted again once the copyright issue has been dealt with.
A quicker approach may be to not bother with the licensing at all but to rewrite that section from scratch and to summarize in your own words what the sources say without copy-pasting the content. Quoting the sources would only be necessary if we quote someone's personal opinion, say an art critic's assessment of the artistic quality of Alfred Edwin Jones' work, and we don't want to put words into that person's mouth - the Michael Scott quote would be one such example. (As an unrelated aside, the link for Scott pointed to the disambiguation page Michael Scott, not to the article Michael Scott (architect) on this Michael Scott. You should return to the talk page of the main article, Talk:Alfred Edwin Jones, and discuss the matter with the OTRS member there who was helping. Also the editor who originally removed the copyrighted content.
