  • The global consultation on partial and temporary office actions that ended in October received a closing statement from staff concluding, among other things, that the WMF will no longer use partial or temporary Office Action bans... until and unless community consensus that they are of value or Board directive.

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Can you please reinstate the Forward Email page and my other changes made and contributions made in the past 24 hours?

Hello Glen,

Thank you for reading this message. I see that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Forward_Email as well as other comments here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Niftylettuce led to changes being removed that I made to these pages:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forward_Email https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_forwarding https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_webmail_providers

Could you please restore them? Forward Email is very popular and widely used service I built. It has 2,000 stars on GitHub, approximately 20,000 users with 10,000 domains active, and is #1 on Google and other search engines for "email forwarding service" search.

There is significant mention of this service publicly, here are just a few links:

  • Recommended answer under Google Sites Help for "How do I create individual email addresses with my website domain"[1]
  • Most upvoted answer on Indie Hackers "Looking for custom email addresses for free?" forum post[2]
  • Hacker News comments discussing this is a great alternative to Mailgun (after Mailgun lowered free-tier API from 10k to 625 emails per month)[3]
  • Most upvoted answer under StackExchange ProWebmasters Q&A for "How to forward emails to my custom domain to my Gmail account?"[4]
  • YouTube video by Hack Upstate on how to set up a website using Forward Email service[5]
  • Discussion on Forward Email service at LowEndTalk forums[6]
  • Multiple high-traffic blogs with posts about this service, such as Woorkup[7], DuoCircle[8], DevAnswers.co[9], Roy Duineveld[10], Boris Mann[11], Seonwoo Lee[12], Tucker's Site[13]
  • Recommended provider by ClubBuzz[14]

Further information to provide that this is a legitimate service and company:

  • Niftylettuce, LLC is a registered Delaware corporation in the United States under File Number 5791112
  • The service is used on over 10,000 domain names[15]

I will add the first bullet point list above as "Reception" section to the article.

I'm also a co-founder[16] of OurHarvest if that helps my credibility in the team community and my GitHub is @niftylettuce.

Hi Nick Baugh, thanks for the note. The page was nominated for deletion and you are welcome to take this to Deletion Review however I'd strongly recommend you read Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines as you clearly have an interest in created these articles. As you will see on the policy COI editing is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia. Please ensure you are acting within all Wikipedia policies before editing again. Happy to provide more info if needed. Thanks for the protection on My Truth. I've posted at BLPN to ask other editors to take a look and weigh in. Schazjmd (talk) 05:52, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

@Schazjmd: All good thanks for cleaning it up. Could see a lot of SPAs were editing it and getting blocked so happy someone neutral came in and tidied it. Cheers. Glen 05:56, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

How to reply??? MinecraftBacon499 (talk) 11:56, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

@MinecraftBacon499: You are replying. Just write what you need here. Glen 11:57, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Do you know how to copy a image template from an article to another article? MinecraftBacon499 (talk) 12:09, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

@MinecraftBacon499: I'm not sure I'm following can you please give me an example? Glen 12:15, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Im not very sure how to make an example too but You know that article, Transport for Wales(train operating company), The Future fleet Section, the British Rail Class 230 part? Im trying to copy that TfW's new D-train diagram Image to to that article MinecraftBacon499 (talk) 12:25, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

@MinecraftBacon499: Sorry I'm not sure what you're trying to do but if you click the edit button on the article that has the image you like (as an example), then copy the wikitext into the article you're trying to edit you should be able to have a play and see how it looks. Make sure you use the show preview button before hitting publish in case someone reverts your tests. I'll post some more info to your talk page. Glen 12:33, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

War on Terror

This have been going on for a couple of days now using multiple IP's, when blocked they just get a new one. Its clear they are going to continue (they have said so). I have requested full page protection, beyond that I have no idea what to do.Slatersteven (talk) 13:23, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

@Slatersteven: Thanks for your effort I'll take a look. Glen 13:25, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Revdel

Hi, you recently blocked PubescentFlyer22 for personal attacks on another editor. Perhaps you can revdel both their edits because they appear to have posted another editor's home address. Thanks, Hillelfrei talk 14:41, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

@Hillelfrei: Sure it's done. Glen 14:46, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

A recent block you made

Hey, you recently blocked a sexual harasser I have been having issues with here. Since they like to continue to harass people after being blocked, can you please block their talk page and email access as well? More information can be found here Thanks. --I dream of horses (talk page) (Contribs) Remember to notify me after replying off my talk page. 07:37, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

@I dream of horses: Sure I have reblocked. Let me know if you want your talk page semi-protected. Glen 07:40, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
I'm a bit reluctant to do that since non-confirmed users sometimes have questions they want to ask me; rest assured there's been a few admins willing to do that if I change my mind. @I dream of horses: all good I understand. We'll just keep an eye on it. Thanks! Glen 07:45, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

Thank you

Thanks for blocking that IP, 82.137.15.185 who constantly added, changed or removed redirects. It was really stressful reverting all his/her edits. I thought that the IP would be done but he/she kept going and I had to revert more edits. Also out of frustration, I reported the IP. 3125A Talk! Edits! 13:29, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

@3125A: no problem they were just trolling by the looks. I'll keep an eye on them when the block expires. Thanks for your antivandalism efforts! Glen 13:32, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
Glen, Also I guess they're scared since they haven't made any more edits since 2 days ago when the block expired. I hope they learned their lesson. 3125A Talk! Edits! 14:27, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Changes in en.wikipedia pages

Dear Glen,

I used to edit in 2010 under the name "Smi1" [see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Heinrich_Petermann and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justus_Perthes_(publishing_company)] but forgot how to activate this. I just made a new account in case I want to change or add pages.

There is a message from 2017 which criticizes the length and content of the Petermann page:

The neutrality of this article is disputed. (June 2017) This article needs additional citations for verification. (June 2017) This article's tone or style may not reflect the encyclopedic tone used on Wikipedia. (June 2017)

I am a bit biassed as I am the author of the publication 'Petermann's maps', but thought it necessary to give such an extensive account of this geographer/cartographer as there are hardly any English texts that are concerned with this person, while he had such a big influence on the development of cartography worldwide and I gave special attention to his British experiences. Especially the latter were not very much part of my publication.

When I confront Dutch pages on the English Wikipedia I add information because they are either outdated or have ample information. Thus I recently updated a little bit the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Library_of_the_Netherlands and messaged the director general Lily Knibbeler (my former employer. I worked 43 years for this library and am now pensioned off) that her Communications Department should extend and update the page as the data I encountered were from 2003, while big changes were made in 2014 when the Public Library Facilities System Act or 'Library Act' became active. She promised to alert her department on this, but till now nothing has been done. Maybe after the Covid19-pandemia abates as the library is closed at the moment!

The same message I sent to the Netherlands Architecture Institute (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands_Architecture_Institute) as their name and function changed in 2013. Nothing happened.

Probably there are many institutional pages which need to be updated and when I encounter them and have information I shall probably do so.

With kind regards,

Jan Smits Rotterdam, The Netherlands — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smi953 (talkcontribs) 20:29, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

@Smi953: Thanks for your message. Looking at those articles I'd simply encourage you to be bold and update them. I'll post some helpful links to your talk page around of manual of style, neutral point of view and tone and reliable sources which will help improve the article. Thank you for your contributions! RajeshKhanna

The wikipedia content of RajeshKhanna does not do any justice to what he was. It was informed earlier also to do a thorough Google search on interviews of his co-stars & writer Salim Khan all have clearly stated no one has seen stardom like him .He created mass hysteria like none before & after (read Dilip Chitre's chapter) there was a chapter in Bombay University titled as the Charishma of RajeshKhanna. He remains the biggest Superstar in terms of the impact he had . You have omitted your own statements earlier on him by reducing of his being one of the most influential actors ever you have deliberately not included the statements made by his co-stars on his being the biggest ever Berrylstone (talk) 01:29, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

Berrylstone, thanks for your contributions and that's fine however you cannot just add that someone is "the biggest [star] ever" without pointing to a reliable source. You also need to be aware of the neutral point of view policy. Also your edits had spelling mistakes so please ensure you spell check any additions. Good luck in your editing.
