- Thanks, but no, it isn't. That's the second time someone has suggested that image. Why is it so hard to tell Glaucomys from Pteromys? (Rethorical question, never mind. Probably because the Russian Wikipedia has that image in their generic "Flying Squirrel" article, even though they unsurprisingly mostly discuss the Siberian Flying Squirrel.) I came across template:familytree yesterday. It seems like it might be very useful, but I am afraid it is still a bit complex for me. I figured if anyone could explain it to me, you could. It seems like it could be made to turn an Ahnentafel into a (sideways) tree with links, though I think a bit less automatically than I would wish<g>. For example, someone just added a lot of Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna of Russia's ancestry in her first paragraph, which would probably better be treated as the sort of family tree that the template produces, later in the article. How would one go from an Ahnentafel (see below) to a tree? Is there any nearlly automatic way to do it? - Nunh-huh 20:29, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Fair-use image removed from your user page[edit]

Leyden[edit]
Joel Leyden is a known SEO spammer and states that on his website. He is using Wikipedia, and has admitted as such, to get traffic to his blog. He is not a noted journalist. I state this unequivocally as someone who has worked for 15 years in the Israeli media, and as anyone from the Hebrew wikipedia will tell you. In fact, he is an unknown in Israel. Here is a classic example of someone abusing wikipedia for personal gain. What is worse, his blog (and as an examination will show, it is nothing more) is one of the tools he is using to fight a custody battle with his ex-wife over his children. As a user, now banned, he attempted to use wikipedia to fight this same custody battle, as a perusal of the history of Raanana will show. In addition, he was banned for harrassing another user, both online and in person. The votes to keep included sockpuppets and personal friends, who have fewer than ten edits each, i.e., make 3 edits and vote for Joel. I am not even going to discuss his personal attacks against me or the foundation on his blog. Given the confusion of information and misinformation there, I can only wonder what kind of nonsense he is posting in his article. Nevertheless, I will state this, summarizing a lengthy email which I sent to the Arb Com about two months ago: if the Hebrew Wikipedia, based in Israel, sees fit to include a version of the article about him or his blog, I will support its inclusion in English. If not, I will continue to regard it as simple SEO spam and unverifiable drivel by someone attempting to use wikipedia to attain fame and pursue his own, selfish agenda, using false information, sock puppets, and what have you. Attempting to follow your example, I downloaded Inkscape, and tried adding text and a few more small features to your great replacement Image:Drosophila speciation.svg. As you can see, it didn't go so well. (It opens fine in Inscape after download, too!) Why don't textual captions work on Inkscape SVGs uploaded to Commons? BenB4 13:45, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

- Hmm, I don't really know. They "just work" for me. The only text-related problem I've noticed is that, if the Wikipedia servers don't have the font you've chosen, they'll substitute another one that may or may not look the same. I've got that less frequently lately, maybe the server admins have installed more fonts. I've found that sticking to free software fonts (such as freefont) tends to help. FWIW, the font I used for Speciation modes.svg is URW Nimbus Sans L, a free Helvetica clone that is the basis of FreeSans, and so should look more or less identical. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 18:26, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

English at "God Like Level"?[edit]
Hello. I realised that you have the template, in which you claim to speak English at a 'God Like Level'. I am not too sure if it is written in jest, or you really think your English is that good.
If it is the latter, I would just like to point out a mistake on your userpage, a case of Redundancy.
It is sufficient to say "I am a full-time software....", and the word "currently" is not necessary.

- The "godlike" userbox is meant as a not-too-subtle comment on the inflation of the language skill levels. The Babel boxes started out as a simple system with three levels: 1 (beginner), 2 (intermediate) and 3 (advanced). Level 3 was originally intended to encompass everyone fluent in the language, including most native speakers as well as fluent non-natives. Since then, an unnumbered "native" level was added, prompting the creation of a level 4 (near-native), level 5 (professional), and I hear there's been talk of adding a level 6 too. Over at Wikipedia talk:Babel, someone extrapolated the trend and decided to create this "level infinite" template as a short cut to its logical conclusion. As I was involved in some related debates at the time, I appreciated the irony and have given the template a place on my user page ever since, even though I sometimes do worry that someone might take it seriously.
- In any case, it does have the undeniable advantage that I know I'll never need to change it, no matter how many new levels are added to the Babel system. And if it's a little exaggerated, why, surely overrating one's own language skills on a self-evaluated rating system must be utterly unheard of. Anyway, for what it's worth, on other projects I just rate my English skills at the original level 3 (advanced), which I can at least count on existing at all projects. And if someone should therefore assume that I am less than fluent in English, for not rating myself at level 4 or 5 or whatever, I don't really mind — and in any case I expect that the overestimates and the underestimates will more or less balance themselves on average. With a self-rated system, that's all one can really ask for.
- As for the "currently", it's not meant to be redundant, but I do agree it could be phrased better. I think I'll go with "as of this writing", although "for the time being" could also be appropriate. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 02:49, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I have noticed that User-Missingno has used IP 66.196.42.80 his IP is 70. something and someone else has used the same IP. Further evidence: I found the same Ip Listed in the free Open proxy lists on Yahoo and Google. It is a "CGI Proxi". Thank you for your help, Jak.

- I don't quite remember why I didn't just apply it back then; I think I was probably because there were a few corner cases involving both commas and parentheses in the same title that I wanted to tweak, combined with a general lack of round tuits (you may have noticed I haven't been spending much time on Wikipedia lately).
