Edit summaries and sources[edit]

Hello, John5962. Your change to content at Aleria was correct, but please make use of the WP:edit summary facility and provide a reliable source for any changes you make. I've found and added a source to confirm the accuracy of your change; best if you do this yourself; unexplained changes, coupled with the lack of sources to verify them can lead to automatic, justified reversion by page-watchers and bots; and wasted effort on your part. Best, Haploidavey (talk) 22:48, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Removing cited sources[edit]

You removed the legitimate government source I added to Aleria to support your changes. Please don't ever do that. Haploidavey (talk) 22:53, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John, I just saw your stub for Sans étiquette. I was wondering if it may make sense to roll this into Independent Politician instead of having an independent article for the French term. The article on fr wiki seems to do it similar to the en wiki article. Thoughts? Jake Brockman (talk) 14:54, 23 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Sans étiquette[edit]

Hi, I'm Mabalu. John5962, thanks for creating Sans étiquette!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Thanks for this - can you please add sources and citations to show that this has potential to be more than a Wiktionary definition?

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Your contributed article, Sans étiquette[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Sans étiquette. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Independent politician. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Independent politician – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Jake Brockman (talk) 20:15, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. You can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → check Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Year ranges[edit]

I notice you've been updating demographic data for a large number of towns, and I commend you for that. However, you have also been editing year ranges, replacing n-dash with a hyphen (the ASCII character that's actually on the keyboard). I want to draw your attention to the Manual of Style: MOS:DATERANGE (also MOS:DASH), which specifies the n-dash as standard in these circumstances. The MOS is "a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow", so these changes are nonstandard and an unnecessary effort. Certainly the n-dash, whether entered literally, via an HTML entity, with {{ndash}}, or through the editor dropdown, is harder to enter, but the visual effect is noticeably more professional. David Brooks (talk) 22:22, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Looking more closely, I can see that the hyphen, being shorter than the n-dash, can prevent a line break in its table cell on a typical-sized browser page. This isn't always the case: the two columns in the infobox can have different widths in different pages for reasons I can't figure out. But I think the hyphen is justified in this case of a narrow field width. I've reverted the "corrections" I made. David Brooks (talk) 21:18, 25 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please preview, consolidate, and summarize[edit]

Hello, and thanks for your contributions. Below are a few editing suggestions to make it easier for you and others to collaborate on the encyclopedia. Please preview, consolidate, and summarize your edits:

  • Try to consolidate your edits, at least at the section level, to avoid cluttering the page's edit history; this makes it easier for your fellow editors to understand your intentions, and makes it easier for those monitoring activity on the article.
    • The show preview button (beside the "publish changes" button) is helpful for this; use it to view your changes incrementally before finally saving the page once you're satisfied with your edits.
  • Please remember to explain each edit with an edit summary (box above the "publish changes" button).

Thanks in advance for considering these suggestions. Eric talk 23:58, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. A year and a half on, I see that you continue to edit without leaving summaries, which makes more work for your colleagues here. Is there anything about my above message that you have difficultly understanding? Please ask for help if you are having trouble grasping the concepts. Eric talk 12:05, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Infoboxes of French communes[edit]

Hi, could you please stop adding minuses to empty fields in the infoboxes of French communes, like you did here and here? It doesn't add any information. Markussep Talk 20:07, 12 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

France metadata Wikidata[edit]

Hi, I noticed you're reverting my edits, in which I added the France metadata Wikidata template to infoboxes for communes in France. Why did you do that? Markussep Talk 11:28, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you removed the France metadata Wikidata template from several articles again, for instance at Abidos, Pyrénées-Atlantiques. While I appreciate that you're updating articles about French communes, I strongly disagree with these edits, because they remove the references for the population figures and create more work for other editors when the populations need to be updated. With {{France metadata Wikidata}}, we can benefit from the automated updates at Wikidata, based on publications from the French statistics office INSEE. I will revert your edits now, and I hope you will refrain from removing the templates again. Markussep Talk 06:08, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed you have been doing this again, at for instance Abainville and Abancourt, Nord. I will revert your edits, please stop this. Markussep Talk 09:58, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Population tables[edit]

Hi, could you check the references you add? The Cassini-Ehess links you added for Abaucourt and Zuani pointed to the data sheet for Aast, Pyrénées-Atlantiques instead, I corrected that. And when you add population figures for years that aren't covered in the existing references, like you did at Abaucourt-Hautecourt, you should add a reference for those data.
