Red Dot Maps for Indiana[edit]

I have made some Red Dot maps for Indiana:

I also have a program that will generate these types of maps for any other state as well:

I like the little bit of color, and the roads are a nice reference I think, instead of just the county lines.

I am not totally sold on the Red Blotch maps... Sometimes it looks better, sometimes it looks worse. I could go either way on that.

I am interested in other people's thoughts on this. Marvin01 | talk 22:33, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Noticed the ones you added to Indiana towns. Very cool. To me, this is tier one of visual information about the town, tier two being an aerial photo of downtown and tier three being pics of selected landmarks. Ideally, every town should have all three. I like the way I've seen them on atlases: little towns get dots; big cities get blotches to show their extent. I like the roads too; informative but not overly detailed. Nice job! --Tysto 14:40, 2005 August 21 (UTC)

Map request[edit]

Interstates in Chicago

Could you possibly produce a map of the Interstates in Chicago and its immediate vicinity (I-80, I-90, I-94, I-55, I-57, I-290, I-355, and maybe I-88)? I'd like it for the Streets and highways of Chicago article. Thanks. Kelly Martin 06:02, September 11, 2005 (UTC)

I think somewhat larger numbers would be a good thing. I'm also wondering if a reduced area version would be useful; this is intended for an article on Chicago itself and we don't really need the suburban portions as much. How about one with the northwest corner near the I-94/I-294 junction (far enough west so that all of I-294 south of that intersection is in the map) and the southeast corner near the I-80/I-94 crossing into Indiana? That will cover the area discussed in the article and make for a slightly less complex image. We lose I-355 but I can live with that since I-355 is not in Chicago proper. The one you already did (maybe with larger numbers) would be good for a Chicagoland article, which we might yet do, but that not quite on the table just yet. Also, is there any chance of getting I-190 labeled? I know it's a short spur, but it is part of the Kennedy and is important because it serves O'Hare.
Thanks again for all your help! Kelly Martin 22:02, September 12, 2005 (UTC)
The new one is perfect! Thanks so much! Kelly Martin 04:42, September 13, 2005 (UTC)
If your program works this way, you can use these sorts of shields — Image:Interstate 55.svg — for Interstate maps. Also, how did you do it? I'm trying to find some good way to do maps for Illinois State Routes and I don't feel like breaking out Fireworks or anything like that! —Rob (talk) 22:35, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Interstate maps[edit]

Hey Marvin, I really like your maps of the Interstates (like Image:Interstate90 map 1050.png), but I noticed you haven't done all the interstates. It'd be really cool if you could finish the job. Thanks a lot, Ingoolemo talk 05:41, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Marvin, I like the map you made for Grand Rapids Michigan. Could you make a map for Muskegon Michigan? Thanks alot Honolulublue4life 06:39, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Awards[edit]

I, Tysto, hereby award you this Working Man's Barnstar for producing many excellent maps for Indiana and other places and for taking requests for specific maps. Your contributions make Wikipedia a better place.

red dot thanks[edit]

Marvin01,

Thanks a bunch for your tireless red-dotting of Indiana. I checked my watchlist to see a very nice map laid out for Kokomo, what a delight! --I. Neschek | talk 21:42, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wanted :: Red Dot Biogeography Map for Shawnee, Kansas[edit]

This Kaw River city's article got upgraded using an Indiana Infobox template that includes:

What (if any) tips, tricks & traps to avoid can you suggest to create & upload this image?

I appreciate all your work on red dot maps, but I've noticed that your map for Hamlet, Indiana puts the dot in the wrong spot (you have it 20 miles too far north, in the wrong county). I can fix this map myself in the Commons, but I figured you may want to take care of it as it's your project. Craig R. Nielsen 07:34, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So you're the guy with the Indiana maps and infoboxes.[edit]

Thanks! I saw one at Kirklin and "stole" it for Sheridan. Glad you'd uploaded Sheridan's map. Nice work. NStahl 01:46, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dot in wrong county[edit]

First off, thanks for the maps -- they're very useful!
While reading the article for the town of Hamlet, Indiana (which is in Starke County), I noticed that the map puts the town's red dot in eastern LaPorte County instead. Could you edit the Hamlet map to show the dot in the correct county?
Thanks! Huwmanbeing 01:40, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reference[edit]

great maps, how can I reference one in powerpoint to show as an overview map for some work I'm doing in Decatur County? Imap 17:31, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for asking. Don't worry about an attribution reference unless you plan on putting the work somewhere on the web or otherwise publishing the work, in which case just add in a link back to the source. - Marvin01 | talk 22:46, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • This also goes for the people who, in several instances that I have noticed, take one of my maps and modify it in some minor way, and then present it back to Wikipedia as their own. I don't ask for much, just please be polite and link back to the original map. - Marvin01 | talk 22:46, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Red dot maps[edit]

Do you have a red dot map for the towns of Pendleton, lapel, windfall, Markleville, and Westfield Indiana Jjfg45

  • Yes, these (and most other towns in Indiana) are already uploaded to the Commons, they just haven't been added to the city pages yet. - Marvin01 | talk 05:02, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:54, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please claim your upload(s): File:Interstate80 map 1050.png[edit]

Hi, This image was seemingly uploaded prior to current image polices, Thank you.

However, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure all media on English Wikipedia is correctly licensed and attributed it would be appreciated if you were able to confirm, that it was your own work, by marking it as {{own}}, amending the {{information}} added by a third party, and by changing the license to an appropriate "self" variant. You can also add |claimed=yes to the {{Media by uploader}} or {{Presumed self}} tag(s) if present to indicate that you've acknowledged the image, and license shown (and updated the {{information}} where appropriate).

IF you have other uploads, please consider "claiming" them in a similar manner, You can find a list of files you have created here.

This will assist those reviewing the many many "free" images on commons that have not yet been transferred to Commons. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:09, 23 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
