About the Pagoda pic

What sort of permission did the photographer give you? Because unfortunately, unless he gave you full permission to use the image anywhere (ie. not just on Wikipedia), the image will still be considered copyright, and will be deleted. If however, he has given you the right to reproduce the photo anywhere, then you can attach this tag to it: {{Attribution}}. -- Chairman S. Talk ^Contribs 20:51, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Watermill and other subjects

Thank you for your contribution. Inevitably we cannot all know everything, and it is a great help when people from quite different ones can work together. My problem with what was in the article previously, was partly a matter of style and presentation, rather than of content. However in amending some one else's work, in an area beyond my knowledge, I needed to flag up what I had done, so that some one who did know could attend to it.

I have also been trying to tidy up material on iron-related subjects, where different articles had been developing independently and possibly contradicting each other. If you are qualified to do so, could you have a look at blast furnace and history of ferrous metallurgy to ensure that what I changed has not made them inaccurate? China and the Lighthouse of Alexandria

Do some research on the Hellenic Bactrian kingdom it was important for spreading combining Buddhism and Classical Greek values and spreading them (for example to China). Alexandria is said to have had a Buddhist community ad we do know that the Hellenic empires did establish diplomatic and cultural contact between India and the Mediterranean. Flat earth

I edited your article. In fact, Chinese astronomy showed very little trace of being aware of a spherical earth. I know you may not want to hear that with your expensive multi volume S&C in China lying on your lap, but Needham is often very optimistic in his interpretations of Chinese science and technology to the point of distorting the historical truth. You should consult in future more than a single source. In this case, your heavy reliance on Needham all made the difference between the Chinese having or not having a concept of the rotundity of the earth. I'm looking at Image:Northern Song Dynasty, porcelain Ding Ware Bottle, 11th–12th century.jpg, but the copyright page you link to ([1]) mentions nothing about the GFDL or CC - why did you mark the image with false information? Pagrashtak 19:02, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

You should revert to the {{Smithsonian}} template and remove any PD, GFDL, or CC templates. I should add that I don't believe the images will qualify for fair use, however. Pagrashtak 19:13, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

I personally believe the image is non-replacable. Getting worked up over a single image is very silly. I personally have not found anyplace on the internet which has free images of Chinese antiquities. This qualifies as non-replacable. Also, the Smithosonian explicitly mentions that these images may be used for education or non-commericial purposes. The image should be there, and should not be deleted, for it is not replaceable.Zeus1234 17:44, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

No, don't pull it right away. Go and check out a few pictures from the WP:FA#Media list. Take a look at some of pictures there, selecting a picture or two (looking specifically for posters) to see their Fair Use rationales. Unfortunately I don't have the means to get around much. I've been to Germany, Romania, Mexico, the Caymen Islands, and that's about it (except for Hawaii, but that's a United State, despite its exotic appeal). I knew that Greek nightclubs and night life must be fun, thanks for sharing the article! I'd love to go to Athens and stand in awe of the Parthenon (keeping in mind just how old it truly is). There are many other places in Greece I would like to visit too. Did you see that 300 movie? Wasn't that rediculous how they made Sparta look? Like some great Classical Greek city? Hahaha! Well, for a guy without "the means", you have a fair travel record in our neck of the woods... After all, the Parthenon is visited by everybody, except sadly by the Greeks themselves. Last time I visited it was 10 years ago, under the first full-moon-open-for-all thing (yes, I was in love). Before that it was with a school excursion. To return to the important issue (:-)), it's kinda sad that we got to become the only country in the world where plate smashing for fun is prohibited by law! Not that flowers are that bad (especially along with the trays). I wonder what the original Pericles would have thought about that... About Image:Liaodyanstyguanyin.jpg

PericlesofAthens, I have good news! I contacted the photographer of Image:Liaodyanstyguanyin.jpg at Flickr and she graciously agreed to license her photograph under a license that permits commercial reuse and derivative works! I just uploaded the image to Image:Liao Dynasty - Guan Yin statue.jpg at the Wikimedia Commons and changed all of the incoming links on to point there. That is one step towards improving the image-related issues at the Song Dynasty article. --Iamunknown 01:04, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

History of the Song Dynasty

By creating this new article, I feel you can now easily get both Song Dynasty and History of the Song Dynasty to GA status. If you nominate the History of the Song Dynasty, I will pass it with minimal changes. All that you will need to do is expand the lead and fix the bibliography section to omit the references that are no longer needed. I've noticed that you've been having some image problems with your articles, at least in other people's eyes. While I can't be of much help here, I have uploaded a photo of a Song-era mirror from my personal collection. The mirror is nothing special, but the image doesn't have any copyright issues. Hello, thanks for responding to the FAC page of Shen Kuo. I have one question though, what did you mean by the headers and sub-headers not making sense (besides the Book Chapters one)? In any case, I have changed the 'Book Chapters' heading to 'Dream Pool Essays' instead. I at least got to one of your requests so far. Lol. None of my sources list any of the many languages the book has been translated into, although Chinaculture.org does (English, French, German, and Japanese). However, Chinaculture.org is not a very credible source, and I do not want to list it in the article beyond the 'External links' section. Do you know of where I could find out what languages it has been translated into? Besides, of course, going to amazon.com or something. Thanks.--PericlesofAthens 20:04, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Not sure about translations--a librarian would probably be happy to help.

Headers--they seem to overlap. "Life and achievements" sounds like pretty much everything one would put in an encyclopedia article. "Scholarly achievements" overlaps with "Science and technology".

Overall, you want to give a sense of continuity, from early to later life. This doesn't have to be rigidly imposed, but the article should "flow" naturally.

Shen Kuo Images

I searched using the Chinese characters. Thankfully, I have learned some Chinese, so I can sort out (mostly, except for the Cao Cao one) what the images are. There are quite literally tons of images for him, including many of inventions, diagrams etc. Zeus1234 15:53, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

In case you are wondering, the grave is located in Hangzhou. This is also an image of his grave [7]. This web page contains information about the location of his tomb [8]. It really doesn't say anything about the image itself. The chinese text at the bottom says 'all rights reserved', and there is the copyright thing at the bottom. It's impossible to say what the status is of the photo, as they don't explicitly mention it. Zeus1234 15:31, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Translation

Here are the relevant passages from the article. The translation is not perfect, especially the first sentance, which I had some trouble with, but it should enough to wirte on.

Sheng Kuo's tomb is located in Yuhang District of Hangzhou City at the foot of Taiping hill. To the east is Jinlong Mountain, to the west is Fenghuang Mountain. Long ago, Sheng Kuo's tomb, was destroyed. Clues in Ming Dynasty records and folk traditions helped find his grave in 1983 . At the tomb there were layers of bricks, and pieces of Song glassware and ancient coins were also discovered。In 1986, the tomb site was protected by the government. A restoration project led by the Hangzhou Municipal Committee, completed restoration of his tomb on September 28, 2001.

Yes, the article is looking good, even though I'm annoyed that all the quotes were removed. This is not your fault though. I do have one suggestion though, consolidate the paragraphs in the Scholarly Achievements section, as there are 4 one-line paragraphs there. Tsien/Needham

Pericles, you are adding references of Needham v.5 pt 1, but v.5 pt 1 was not written by Needham; it was written by Tsien, and Needham is just the overall editor. I agree he's the better known name by non-specialists, but he has no authority in the history of printing, whereas Tsien was one of the great scholars in the field, professor of chinese literature and library science at the University of Chicago. I am going to change all the refs to list him first, and then Needham in parentheses as editor of the series, unless you can give me some good reason otherwise. DGG 07:12, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi, you remember a while ago when you asked if Shen was married and had kids or not? He did, both. I have updated the article, but I need help clearly translating this passage from the simplified Chinese wikipedia:

朱彧在《萍洲可談》的記載，沈括前後有二任妻子，第二任是淮南轉張芻之女，張氏驕蠻凶悍，平時常虐待沈括，将胡须连皮带肉扯将下来，兒女們抱头痛哭，跪求張氏息怒；又驅逐元配之子，年年狀告其父子。但是張氏去世後，沈括竟鬱鬱寡歡，过扬子江时，一度跳水尋短，並於隔年去世（《文海披沙摘录》）。

She also drove off Shen Kuo's son from his first marraige, and brought suit against both father and son every year. However, after Ms Zhang died, Shen Kuo was depressed. Yes. The castle scenario. I doubt that he'd be wearing armor while taking a walk on the castle wall. It probably would be a daily thing and require no armors & prepararations for battles. I tried to fit him into battle suits but they just don't look right on him & make him look like some sort of a toy. I already did a watercolor painting, and so I'll paint oil over. History Major

I enlisted in the military for college money and served in the 82nd Airborne Division for over three years. I've been out for three years now and would like to get a doctorate in Chinese history, focusing on the Song Dynasty. However, I'm not too sure how a history degree would be too useful in the real world. I'm torn between my love of Chinese history and the thought of wasting 6 years on said degree and not being able to find work. I have heard study of the Song is very popular in the states though.

I will be returning to the University of Cincinnati in the fall, but they only offer an Asian Studies degree. Should I stick with that or should I change it to history even though they do not offer Chinese history as a major? I've even thought about pursuing a degree in Chinese since translators are in big demand now a days, but I would have to transfer to another school to do so. I need to know Chinese anyways if I am to read ancient Chinese manuscripts. Do you have any suggestions? (Ghostexorcist 02:26, 23 May 2007 (UTC))

My idea was to point out the subsequent changes in combat - no troop concentrations that could be gased etc. Ethiopia is possibly a better example, but much much later. Hi PericlesofAthens! I noticed that on many of the images you uploaded from the Freer Gallery of Art of Smithsonian Institute, now there is a Licensing problem claiming that there is no copyright tag, example. Hey Pericles, I'll see to the 11th Century article. Yes, the drawing is going fine - it's not going to be as good as some of the Renaissance paintings. My watercolor painting draft was terrible, so I was getting discouraged, but as for the real thing- oil painting, it's actually going pretty nicely. History of the steel industry

While what you have recently added to the above article is certainly correct, the objective of the article was to deal with the modern steel industry. I am not saying that it is wrong or should not appear in WP, merely that it should not appear here. Link to the places to look for the older steel industry are at the head of the article. It is unfortunate that the person who started this article has lost interst in it before dealing with a number of important sections. I supect the title ought to be History of the modern steel industry, in accordance with the scope indicated in the opening paragraph. It is important that we do not keep getting parallel articles dealing with the same subject, as they are liable to diverge and start expressing contradictory views! I have put a lot of effort into trying to get one article on each subject concerning iron and steel. Subject to any commetns that you may make on the article's talk page or mine, I propose to remove:

• remove your addition
• retitle the article as indicated above
• make sure that your text is incorporated elsewhere in WP (if it not not already. Peterkingiron 13:27, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
